maps behavior differs between devices

This morning I went to go pick up an iPhone 5, and I used the maligned Maps program on my old iPhone 4 to get to the store. It wasn't that bad -- but when I got the new phone, the maps program worked differently on the new phone?

Specifically, on the old phone, I was able to swipe side-to-side on the individual 'green-sign' directions, to step back and forth to see what the next turn would be.

On the new phone, I was stuck on the current step in the directions -- no swiping at all. All I could do was go back to an overview or a list of all the directions.

What's the deal? I should be able to swipe between the direction steps, shouldn't I? It certainly was a LOT easier to work with that way. Being stuck in close view on the current step is no good.

Has maps been updated? Maybe my old phone had a newer version than the new phone?

Thanks,

Bob

iPhone 5 supports turn-by-turn...iPhone 4 does not:

  1. Type in the address you want to go to (or tell Siri) in the search bar.
  2. Tap the car icon next to the address (or tap the directions button for walking directions, but you won't get turn-by-turn with walking directions unfortunately)
  3. Tap start, and Siri will start to guide you along the way.

Thank you for that. I know I had seen it. I just tried it on my 4S, and if I use current location as the begining point, it will not swipe. If I use it as the end location, it will, and if I sent a route between two typed addresses it will swipe. I agree it may be the fact that when you hit start from your current location it begins the voice navigation right away.

Any word on the status of this Bug Fix?

Why is the Swipe feature only available when not using your Current Location? I would really like the Swipe feature to be available regardless of the method of search (Current Location versis typed location).

It appears that cetain functionality is mutually exclusive.

If inputting two locations locations, Swipe feature available but not turn-by-turn voice navigation or ETA statistics.

If using Currentl Location, just the opposite features are available.

All these features should be available all the time. Seems like a great feature.

I'd just like to point out that this is not quite correct.

While it is correct for my 4S, my wife has a 3GS updated to iOS 6 and maps on her phone support swiping using current location.

This is an incredibly irritating bug, all the more so because it would be trivial to fix it.

While I understand what you're getting at, a phone 'not supporting the GPS' is not a reason for swipe to work or not work. The statement I was addressing was: "iOS 6 maps doesn't allow swiping between directions when using current location," which is wrong. iOS 6 DOES allow swiping between directions when using current location, if your phone is too old to do turn by turn.

In any case it's a bug.
