iphone 5 iOS 6 screen dimming problem

I just purchased my new 64GB iPhone 6 from the AT&T store. The phone works great, but I have one issue that pops up a few times a day. The screen suddently dims to where the icons are barely visible. Unlocking the screen or pressing any other button DOES NOT change the brightness. However, when I navigate to the Brightness setting and touch the brightness slider the screen brightness immediately pops back to life. I do not have the Auto-Brightness turned on.

I upgraded from a iPhone 4 with iOS 6 already loaded on it and I did not have this same issue on the iPhone 4...at least I don't recall having one. When I purchased my new iPhone 5 I simply did a restore from the iPhone 4 backup.

Anyone else having this same problem? If you did have the same problem and returned your phone for an exchange, did the new phone still have the same problems or not? Any help would be appreciated.

Ths has happened to me 2 or 3 times, but only when I am plugging in my iphone 5 to charge it (but my battery is not near depletion or anything like that at the time). Then the brightness stays low no matter what buttons I push. I have fixed it by powering down the phone and powering it back on. When it comes back on it has the normal brightness (in fact the minute the apple logo comes on it is at normal brightness). I haven't tried going into brightness settings to see if that brings it back - I will try that when and if it happens again. I have auto brightness turned off.

I am having the exact same issue. It's happened to me 4 times in the last month.

It only happens from the lock screen when I've activated Siri, or even just hit the home button to activate the screen.

The screen goes very dim. I managed to get the screen to come back to life by navigating to the brightness settings and moving the brightness slider down to dim and ten back up to full brightness.

Another time I just hit the on/off button and then hit the home button and the screen came back to life.

It's never happened once I've unlocked the phone.

So I can only guess this is an iOS 6 Bug. Well I hope so. It seems too common to not be.

I have the exact same problem, even with auto-brightness off. I know this thread is a bit old, but I thought I'd confirm it too. It happens at seemingly random times. I have a case on it too, but isn't the ambient light sensor loccated near the phone-speaker? I'm sure this is an iOS 6 issue, maybe even so specific as to only affect the iPhone 5, but still only a software issue (my 4 didn't have this issue).

I've also been having this issue on my iPhone 4S, since before iOS 6 was released. Usually the dimming occurs from the lock screen, but a few times its happened while viewing webpages, or typing a text message. Auto brightness is off and my phone is in an Otterbox Defender case, though the problem has occurred when I had the phone out of the case.

I delayed installing the update until last week - when a major battery problem began out of the blue (unrelated to this issue). However, I am also experiencing the same brightness problem now... The phone screen goes dim to the point I can barely see my apps well enough to go into to settings and adjust, which is interesting because the dimness is much darker than the lowest brightness setting on the phone.

The worst part, though, is when I am on a call and I pull the phone away from my ear -- it doesn't sense this motion and the touch screen won't even respond when I touch it to 'wake up'. I've dropped more than a handful of phone calls since this update last week... I get so frustrated that the phone is unresponsive and end up touching the power (lock) button, thus disconnecting the call.

I hope the next update is almost here... Because this one wasn't the best.
