Slow speed when i using Wi-Fi downloads from App Store

I bought the iPhone 5. And when I'm downloading the application from the App Store via Wi-Fi there is very small download speed. But at the same speed video downloads and web pages are very fast. And when I do connection with non-secure Wi-Fi download speed is much faster. What's the reason of such problem?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

Hey, I was recently trying out various things to get the App to download correctly on the iPhone 5.

I found that using a proxy helps.

I remembered an old solution for Slow PlayStation Network Downloads.

That seems to work for me. It definitely gives an improvement.

I used an old PC with 54G connection to act as the proxy server using Privoxy.

My internet connection speed is 4Mbps and tops at around 409KB/s.

Since my net connection is slower than the 54G router, I don't think that the PC would be a bottleneck. The router is Wifi-N though.

I was not using any other computer while trying this out.

I downloaded a 20Mb App.

With the Proxy Disabled the App took exactly 6 minutes to download.

It works to 57 KB/sec

With the Proxy Enabled the App took exactly 2 minutes.

This worked out to 173 KB/sec.

Although not the ideal 409 KB/sec the 173 KB/sec felt blistering fast to watch.

Could some else verify the same with a faster internet connection and a better local network.

Hello guys!

Today I found the same problem in my new iPhone 5. And I was really dissapointed with it((...But I understood, this problem has come when I update 6.0.1 on 6.0.2. Anyway, after a couple of hours I found decision of this problem. I have read it from someone smart russian guy))

So, you need to change the mode in your router from "N" to "B". Not mixed n/b/g, but only 802.11"B"!

I'll be so glad if this information helps to you and other people

In regards the DNS suggestions this could make a lot of sense considering that Apple probably do some Global load balancing. They would have App Store, iTunes servers in multiple loactions with the idea that when you need to connect you will be sent to the closest server based on GeoIP or Proximity. I would say that everytime your Google, OpenDNS servers answer they just cache and offer the most popular App Store server rather than sending your request to Apple's DNS servers where they will provide you with an answer based on your IP location. Hence if you're based in Ireland you could be connecting to an App Store server in South America, East Asia or Western US - based mostly on chance, rather than being directed to something much more local where speeds are naturally faster.

I like the flexibility of Google and OpenDNS but they have their problems in this regard, they are a bit too intelligent for their own good.

I don't believe this should make any difference considering that many others are reporting that other services function perfectly well - web browsing, performing a speed test, doing other downloads etc. There is NO reason whatsoever to think that App Store downloads would prefer a different Wifi based signal over the other services. What may have happened in your scenario is changing the wifi mode may have assisted with reception problems wherever you were, it may have rebooted the modem and this could have reset your connection with your ISP and your speeds improved based on this. Sometimes it's really simple things.

This is hard to believe because to be honest, a proxy would slow things down.

Unfortunately proxies can speed things up in a deceptive way. Some do caching of previously received data and maybe there was an element of this here.

But because a proxy is na extra hop for your connection to pass through along with the fact that it stops to inspect packets leaving it should in fact slow things down ever so slightly.

If you put the proxy in place and then removed it and saw a consistent speed increase / decrease each time then I'd be convinced, but something tells me it might be pure luck.

Maybe you got lucky around the time you did the download.

I have issues with my wifi too but not just in appstore but wifi in general. I had an iphone 4s and bought the 5 but i dont see it as an upgrade. I don't use the facebook integrated app. And my internet connection from my router is fast. But this iphone 5 only has one bar wifi signal and takes ages to load any page. The 4g/lte is faster then my wifi? :-/

Not cool apple i thought the 5 was an improvement on the 4s... It only has a bigger screen and is slower!!!!!!

If your iPhone 5 has only one bar of wifi signal then you should be closer to the Wifi AP.

Wifi is extremely unpredictable from place to place - it's affected by the walls in your house, the insulation, room objects, interference from other AP's and so many other variables. Wireless N is faster than Wireless G but its signal range isn't as good and it's more prone to disruption. If you cna you might try and set your Wifi to G only mode and see if it helps.

Overall, If you're not close to the router any of the above could be exacerbating your issue, however if you are beside your router and it's still bad then you have a problem with the phone and / or the router, especialy on the basis that if other devices connect and they have no issues then something isn't quite right.

I've got the same problem, my iphone 5 (iOS 6.1.2) downloads apps from the app store extremely slow only over wifi but everything else over wifi works fine on the phone. Switching to cellular data to download the same app is what I've resorted to even for a 6.5mb app. My home wifi dowloads average 9200kbps and my cell data about 5000 to 6000 kbps down.

I've tried all suggestions on the thread from deleting facebook/facebook integration, switching dns servers, hard reseting the iphone, reseting network settings, etc. but nothing works.

If anyone finds a fix or if APPLE has any suggestions please respond.

Thanks!

It appears to be some sort of issue with certain wifi router configurations.

My linksys N router set up as N or Mixed wifi makes AppStore downloads crawl on my iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1.2

But when y set it to B only network the downloads are speedy, for instance I've just downloaded more than 600Mb on apps in a few minutes working with the B network.

This bug is really weird considering that it only affects AppStore downloads and nothing else
