iPhone 5 aluminum discoloration

I noticed the aluminum on the outer edge looks discolored in a spot, like a brownish smudge. It doesn't come off with fingernail scratching, damp cloth scrubbing...

Its two weeks old. I don't think I exposed it to any chemicals as I have been pretty careful so far with it.

Leads me to believe its a material defect. Like the aluminum is oxidizing.

Has anyone else had the issue?

I have the same problem on my black and slate iPhone 5. Tried returning it today and the Genius bar brought out 2 phones and all of them had 3-8 knicks on them. I wanted to return for a white at that point but they were out so going back another day. Just remember to do it in the 30 day period. The Genius guy was pleasant to deal with and even showed me his black iPhone that came defective. He said he was disappointed at first but then realized "it is what it is".

This leads me to believe iPhone 5s really do have a "Scuffgate" problem. To me the phone is awesome but this whole "Scuffgate" is worse than any "Antennagate" because at leats in the words of Steve, we should just hold the phone differently. I understand these are "just" phones and anodized aluminum will do this ie iPods and Macbooks, but never have I got a physically defective Macbook or iPod and I have had many. I understand aluminum is soft and I uderstand that the phone can scuff, but out of the box?

I never went into an Apple Store within the 30 days. Haven't had a chance to go in and show anyone either.

My spot hasn't grown, but if you are within the 30 days, I would definitely bring it into a store and see what they can do.

I think they are (or were) cranking these out as fast as possible and their quality control suffered as a result. The spot wasn't there when I first got it, it showed up two weeks later. Its a very odd defect.
