First...

Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...

Snow Leopard Tech Specs

If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Snow Leopard Disc...

In the US...

1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775

After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

With Regard to ML... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

With at least 1GB of memory, you can upgrade to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. You would order it from the online Apple store, which in the US is 800-MY-APPLE.

If you have at least 2GB of memory, and 4GB would be better, and of course some free disk space, and an Intel Core 2 Duo (not Core Duo) processor, you could install OS X 10.7 Lion. You would want to be at OS X 10.6.8 so you could access the App store to download it. Again, you would call the online Apple store, order it, they'll send you a download code, then download it from the App store.

I am currently planning on doing the same upgrade and called Apple Support. Turns out the Snow Leopard download is still (or once again) available from Apple's website. I found it at http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

If that link doesn't work, the support person just had me go to http://store.apple.com and then search for 10.6 Snow Leopard, which immediately led to the page to purchase.

Good luck!

I meant nothing bad. I am just pointing a matter of fact. I am sorry if the technical jargon, lingo corrections troubles you, but as this is a public forum, one must serve everyone with the same verbiage, otherwise, misunderstandings will mount. If this was a car forum, you wouldn't want me to ask you to hit the clutch when the car has automatic transmission, now would you?

I purchased an Iphone 5 only to find that my computer must have operating system higher than 10.5.8 because I also have to have 10.7 or greater of the itunes....what a bother. you can buy and download anything but you must GO INTO A STORE or order by phone to get a new Mountain Lion. Apple is getting to be a pain in the butt. What is wrong with just putting a download button and letting us buy it?????

KayKCouture, that's incorrect. OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is ONY available via download from the App store.

Upgrading to OS X 10.6 and 10.7 does require a phone call to the online Apple store, although I've been told that OS X 10.6 is also available online thru the online Apple store. Note, you don't have to upgrade to OS X 10.7 if you really want OS X10.8 Mountain Lion. You can go directly from OS X 10.6 to OS X 10.8.

When this Thread was originally started the Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.x Disc was not available from Apples On-Line stores...

The Retail Disc of OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard is now available from Apples On-Line Stores...
