Help in Managing 16 iMac student lab

I am responsible for a 16 iMac lab at a small school. I am looking for a way to manage all 16 from my Macbook (i.e. initiate updates, put files for kids to use, etc.). I also have 20 more iMacs spread across my campus that I would also like to manage remotely. We do not have a server on campus. Any suggestions?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The obvious answer to this would be Apple Remote Desktop which does everything you want it to do and more. Unfortunately, in order for this to work, all the machines must be on the same network, and seeing as you do not have a server, there isn't much you can do. Almost all remote computer managment systems function through a network. You can read about Apple Remote Desktop here.
