Any news ?  I had the problem on my june 2012 mac, but they remplace it by a new one (I had others problems)... february 2013  The sounds problem still there.  But I think that disable the HD 4000 is a solution. When I desable/enable it several times, the crackling appear about 1/2  I can keep the GT 650M for the moment, but I will not keep it always. When I travel, I need to use the HD 4000    So, do you think the 10.8.5 or the 10.9 will resolve the problem or it's a hardware problem ?

Any video I play on youtube now... crackles non stop on my macbook pro retina.

Why such bad construction for such an expensive machine???
And yes, once in a whlile all of my windows also start strobing.

Can't we stop the endless march for NEW things and just MAKE WHAT WE HAVE STABLE????

Looked at another post/forum, their advice was:

"Eventually after looking for a solution.. I found it... the problem can be cured by unchecking 'Automatic Graphic Switching' in the Energy Saver section in System Preferences. However, this ***** as my battery drains quicker."

It seems to have fixed the issue for me somewhat.

I still hear tiny minute pops in the audio.  But it's no longer totally brutal.

For me, the GT 650M don't do crackling  But, I will not stay all my macbook retina life with the GT 650M   If it's an hardware issue, like the logic board, I will go for a remplacement in few monts, I still on the warranty

I have a 15" macbook pro retina that I have been using mainly on desktop attached to a thunderbolt display. Few days ago, I started hearing terrible crackles and distorted audio (youtube, itunes..). Each one of the 4 outputs (internal speakers, ATD speakers, B&W MM-1 external speakers and my headphones) having the same problem. So it definitely is not related to any of the speakers. Unchecking "automatic graphic switching" did not help. Resetting the SMC and PRAM did not either.

Then I tried windows 7 on bootcamp and tried, no problems at all both on youtube and itunes. Clean sound from all the outputs. Clearly this is not an hardware issue.

So I really wonder if it is due to a Macbook retina update of a few days ago that is causing it. Since I am a new to Macs, I wonder whether it is possible to go back to a date prior to the update and restore from there? Or any suggestions?

I'm having the same issue (it seems) with a 21.5" late 2013 iMac. Both the inbuilt speakers, 3.5mm headphones, and a usb headset reproduce the sound - so surely a software issue?

Also I've only really noticed it in Chrome and anything running in a Parelells virtual machine.

Disabling PPAPI on Flash through chrome://plugins/ seems to do the trick. Shame there's nothing I've found to stop it in Parelells.

Fingers crossed it is software and not hardware. Must be.

I have been having the same problem with my brand new retina Macbook Pro. It has been tough to reproduce, but it happens at least once a day, often when I am streaming something in flash, but certainly elsewhere with system sounds. When it starts up it gets a really nasty scratching, sounds lag, blank or garble. It can quickly go away, but when it has fits it does it in chunks. Hope that makes sense.
I will follow up with more details if it continues, but it's good to see I'm not the only one.

Ok Apple, let's hope this is at least on your radar.

Playing any youtube or internet video's start crackeling

The other day it was even crackeling in itunes.

    Not impressed....

Apple lets see a fix for this please!

it seems this issue  last years, so why apple  still bring new products with this unfixed problems?

I've had the problem where I only heard sound from the right speaker or the right side of my headphones and it was really annoying. I had it for a few days until I figured out how to fix it. I don't know if this is what you guys have but the thing that fixed my problem was the balance between each speaker. So basically, go to System Preferences > Sound > Output.. there, you will see a balance option, make sure that the 'arrow' is in the middle.

Hope this will help you guys.

I have the same problem with my 15 MBPr: I hear some cracking noises through the headphones.

I though it was a problem with iTunes or a random sound compression issue. So did I several tests and the problem is the same for every app.

I'll try to speak of it with the customer service. Maybe they can fix it.

For mine one of my speakers wont work. It gives out less sound then the other(pro retina 15 early 2013)

Have you tried looking at the sound balance? I've wrote about it above. In newer Macbooks, the balance sometimes changes. It does it to me from time to time.
