Q: How do I exit full screen mode in Screen Sharing?

I have a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion, and an iMac running Snow Leopard.  When I use Screen Sharing to remote into my iMac from my MBP and go into Full Screen mode, I can't get back out of it.  I tried the keyboard shortcuts I could find online, and moved my mouse cursor to the top etc, but can't get the menu bar to come up or exit full screen mode.  The only way for me to exit Screen Sharing is to kill the process in the Activity Monitor.  I'm assuming this is not the intended way it's meant to work.

    Great finding, xcorlett!

If one doesn't have a trackpad with gesture capability one can try to hold down ctrl and press left (or any of the arrow keys) to switch back to the other workspace. This should work unless the shortcut has been disabled in System Preferences > Keybaord > Shortcuts.

I was stuck in PowerPoint on MacBook Air and no amount of hovering at the top worked.  The three finger swipe was the answer.  Many thanks.

There is a keystroke combo that I remembered trying a thousand times for Thunderbolt, it worked like a charm

Opt+F2, it immediately moved back to the main desktop, when I go back to screensharing, it instantly fills fullscreen again.

Martin's suggestion is great for those of us who toggle frequently between the remote and local screens during a screen sharing session.  Using a keystroke (or swipe) to toggle between screens is much easier than non-full screen mode in which you must click outside the screen sharing window to return to your local screen.

    Thanks Martin & xcorlett!

It's been a while, but I thought I'd add to this.  I frequently have this problem when I have multiple full-screen screen sharing sessions (and use a lot of ctrl-left/right)

This is a little worse because sometimes you want to close one without exiting screen sharing; and you don't want to just leave it around.

I found that sometimes the menu bar is associated with one of the sessions not currently on screen.  If I toggle my active session and go to the top, one of them will always activate and pull down.  At that point it seems to be 'fixed' and I can go back to the full screen space I wanted to close.
