Do you know what kind of processor you have on your macbook ?

Click on [Apple symbol] on top left of your screen -> Select [About this mac]

Snow Leopard system requirements are:

A Mac computer with an Intel processor such as Core Solo and Core Duo and Core 2 Duo

While Lion requirements are:

A Macs, with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.

Unfortunately, that's still not enough information.

Open "About This Mac" from the Apple menu. Click on "More Info". Then click the "Overview" tab. Tell us what kind of Mac you have (the first line in the largest font), year of manufacture (i.e. Mid 2010 or whatever yours says), and give us the info from the "Processor" and "Memory" fields.

Looks like Lion (10.7.x) is the highest you can go:

If you want that, you'll have to call Apple; Lion is no longer in the app store, but you can get a redemption code from Apple and then download it.

You'll also need to up the RAM if you have the standard config - get at least 2 x 2 GB (total of 4) at OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial.
