What do I need to do to upgrade from OS 10.6.8 to the latest Mac OS on a 24" iMac?

You need an iMac 2007 or newer:

The minumum requirement for Mountain Lion is 2GB of RAM, but You should have at least 4GB for it to run smoothly. Also, have at least 20% of free harddrive space for proper operation. Make sure all applications are compatible using www.roaringapps.com. And finally make sure you have a backup before upgrading.
Then you should be fine; do note the other suggestion re. RAM - depending on your workflow, 4 GB is a minimum; if you do any video editing/rendering or other intensive tasks, max out your RAM - OWC (macsales.com) has tested it with 6 GB) - in other words, the more the better the performance.

If you have 10.6.8, you have the Mac App Store (in your dock and Applications folder) - launch it, sign in with your Apple ID and find Mountain Lion and buy it. You can then download it - be prepared, it is a huge 4.37+ GB file.
