Q: Changing the Movie language in Apple TV

I have an Apple TV and live in Austria.

On iTunes, I can rent movies and change the language to English instead of German. I can't seem to do this in Apple TV.

Does anyone know how?

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the input - though I tried changing this and then checked a film preview; the language was still in German and not English.

I'm wondering if this is just how Apple have arranged iTunes and films / Apple TV (though would be a little weird for sure).

    Anyone any other ideas?

    Thanks!

    Shaun,

Possibly the language is linked to the location set during sign up for iTunes.

If you set up an account using German address, billing information etc. iTunes and ATV will only present German content, the exception being "forgein in films".

Changing your account to a US location (requires US billing address) will give you the English content you are looking for.

    All the best

    Frank

    Hi Frank

The language and iTunes content is indeed due to Billing. I've Austrian creditcards and live in Austria, therefore I get that content. This I'm sure is due to copyrights and release availability in some countries (though whilst I understand that, I do not understand why the language of iTunes / App store cannot be in English too, especially when everything else on my Macs is: that is a different, annoying but livable with issue).

The issue is that I can download a film from iTunes to my iMac that has dual languages (as many DVD's) and then choose the language I want, and then stream that to the TV. What I can't do is choose a film direct from Apple TV, choose the language, and stream that without downloading to the Mac first.

I tried changing the Audio as above, and then chose a film to preview, but the preview was in German. Perhaps this works when I rent / stream a whole movie.

    Best regards

Hi Shaun - did you ever find a solution? I am also in Austria, and having the exact same problem (although very new to Apple TV, so maybe its only a teething problem...?). Did the films you rented run in English in the end? is it perhaps only the previews that are in German only?

    Thanks

Hi Henry - to be honest, I never went any further with it. Of course, the obvious thing would be to buy or rent a movie via iTunes and test if it works with the movie. As you know, the previews do not change language.

When I'm back with the Apple TV I will give it a go.

The alternative I've found is to download to another device and then stream to Apple TV through that. This method gives you the chance to change the language.

    Hope it works for you!

I live in Geneva, Switzerland.  The spoken language in this part of Switzerland is French.  However my Apple TV movies are all in German.  This is a laguage that nobody speaks round here.  German is only spoken in places like Berne, Basel, and Zurich.   So what makes Apple think that people in Switzerland speak German?  More people in Switzerland understand and can speak English than can speak German.  Because the movies are not in a language i undersyand, i.e. English or French, i have never paid for them.

The movies part of ATV is of no use to me because of the German.  Ultimately, though, that's been a _good_ thing, because Apple's rental/purchase prices are so high.  I rent everything through SwissTV.

Hi Shaun, I had the same problem, living in Germany, with UK I tunes account and Uk billing address, yet Apple TV defaulted to German dubbed movies.

    But I found a solution!

    Go setting, iTunes Store

    Location

    Preferred location

    That worked for me!

Before I did this I also signed out and back in to the App Store.

    Hope this helps

I also live in Austria, had this problem and finally got it solved. The problem is, you have to change the language on the apple tv with the apple tv remote. However, if you push the select button on the apple tv remote, the remote will also shut down the film on your computer, as the stupid remote works on both! I found this out by copying my rented film on my I phone, who is not affected by the stupid remote, and played the rented film from there. Than it was no problem at all to change the language to English!

So try this, or get a thick led wall between your computer and your apple tv.....

Hello mandarello, to solve your remote problem, you need to pair it with ATV, see Get help with your Apple Remote - Apple Support.
