iPhone/iPad rca out help

I have a third party iPhone4/iPad2 to rca video cable. I hooked it up to the rca ports on my tv and my iPhone or iPad but the screen is not mirrored and pictures/videos don't play. Before I send it back and buy the Apple cable, I thought I should find out if there is a setting that I need to change on the iPhone/iPad or should it just automatically mirror the iPhone/iPad on the tv?

Thanks,

Bob

Maybe I'm use the wrong terms. I want to be able to view the pictures and videos from my iPhone or iPad on my TV. I thought that is what the RCA video cable that connects to the iPhone/iPad and then to the RCA ports on the TV was used for. If not, what is the purpose of connecting to the RCA ports on the TV?

Thanks,

Bob
