iMessage sent as text for first message

After the iOS 6 update, my iPhone 4S through Sprint will not send iMessages to iMessage users on the first text. It sends the message as a text and when the iMessage user responds it changes to iMessage. How can I fix this? I've restarted my phone over and over and turned iMessage on/off. I've connected to iTunes and tried to see if maybe it's a glitch that has an update but nothing comes up. The only thing I have not done is restored my iPhone, and I would like to do that last if NOTHING else works. Everything is backed up, I sync my phone everyday because of work and scheduling.

I am having the exact same issue on Verizon. First message to another iPhone user sends as SMS. Every subsequent message after that uses iMessage. Did not used to function this way. I've disabled iMessage and re-activated it. Reset my phone. Restored my phone. Not sure what else to try.

Thanks for the link, but that's really of no help. iMessage works just fine, after the first message sends as a text.

My phone does the same thing. The first message I send will send text but after they reply (iMessage) never have any problems. If I get a message from them first it's an iMessage but when I start the conversation it only will send an SMS first. Really annoying, why not iMessage from message 1!!!!!!
