Restored iPod to 4.2.1 Previously working apps now say "Update Required: This app requires IOS 4.3"

I recently restored my iPod Touch because e-mail, contacts, and calendar stopped working. Upon restore, I noticed many apps failed to reinstall. Apps like Yelp, Facebook, etc. Roughly 10-15 in total are missing entirely. I can select the app in iTunes and move the icon but the application will not install. If I install the app from the iPod its self, an error comes up saying "Update Required: This app requires IOS 4.3". IOS 4.3 is not available for my iPod.

I don't care if I don't have the latest version on the App store, but I do want the latest version available for my device.

How do I install the latest compatible version from the App store onto my iPod?

(I also have a new iPad. I think that had a part to play in replacing the compatible apps with incompatible ones.)

With 4.2.1 on there you will have to start iTunes, attach the device, then check for updates.

As I have pointed out, IOS 4.3 is not available for my iPod. The latest software available for me is 4.2.1. There are no further upgrades.

If you want to install an app that needs an iOS higher than 4.2.1 you will have to purchase a newer model iPod.

These are all apps that have previously worked on my device using iOS version 4.2.1. I simply wish to return my iPod to the state it was in before I had to restore it.

Are you telling me I have forever lost the capibilities I once had?

Yes unless you have a copy of the previous versions of the apps that worked with iOS 4.2.1. Many developers have been updating their apps for iOS 5 and 6 and dropping compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and less.

Ouch. Well that was a terrible tradeoff... lose 15 apps to get 3 working.

No consolation I'm sure but I just lost 17apps as well...

I'm trying to find out if there is a way to tell what version of software is required before you try to download the app. I've tried several new ones and it seems they all require at least 4.3.1
