iphone 5 shuts off randomly - buttons not recognized to restart

I've had this happen twice so far on an iPhone 5 64gig model. The first time my phone just suddenly powered down - instantly - and it did not respond to any buttons as I tried to power it back up. I thought perhaps the battery was dead and plugged it in - later I checked the phone and it was on and fully charged. Then it happened again - with the battery at 97% I was actually on the speaker phone using my iPhone 5 (with a call to Verizon to setup autopay) and then the call suddenly ended. The iPhone was off - holding the power button did nothing, even trying the "hard reset" option with the home and power buttons did nothing. I then took the phone and plugged in the cable so that it would charge. The phone continued to not recognize any buttons until about 30 seconds after being connected to the charger at which point it booted itself up and showed my battery nearly full. I disconnected the phone and there sat my battery at 97% charge.

Has anyone else seen unexpected behavior like this? I figure I'll take it in to the Genius bar for a swap, but would prefer not to have to redownload all my apps and set all my passwords back up.

Thanks,

James

It is such a hassle when things do not go well. The Genius Bar is a good idea for a solution, make reservation to help avoid long wait. If you want to try getting the iPhone to work better now then, Restore iPhone Firmware with iTunes on computer. See if things are better. If not, proceed with Genius.

I also have the same phone and it does the same thing, it shuts down when not in use by itself, I have to hold the top and bottom bottons for 10 seconds a do a hard reboot to get it back on, this has happened 7 or so time in the last week or so, called Apple Support, and they don't know what is causing it and I am the only one that seems to have this problem 🙂

Anyway, my batery gets used up without using the phone also, charged overnight and 5 hours later it is dead and did not ever use the phone, HUM.

Anyone have any help . PLEASE.

Just chiming in. I have the iPhone 5 64GB, too. It is also randomly shutting down and sometimes the hard reboot does not work the first time.

There is definitely an issue.

I am using verions 6.0.2 (10A551). Unfortunately, I cannot recollect for certain if this issue began after updating to 6.0.2 but the timing when this issue started seems proximate to the time I applied the update.

My girl friend is using version 6.0.1 (10A525) and she is not having this issue.

If anyone is also having this issue, can you please confirm what version of the OS you are using?

I had the I Phone 5 64gig and had the 6.0.1 installed, nothing could be done to help expcept replace the phone, I tried the cords, updating software etc. Soon as Apple changed the phone , not one problem. Apple knows , but they are not talking, I believe it is hardware issues and they do not want a total recall. Just my oppinion Answer is get a knew phone asap before your W is not available.

I am having the same issues as well and my phone was purchased back in December. Mine shuts down randomly and reboots. It was first happening in Words With Friends so I thought it had something to do with the app, but then it did it on other things too. It happens about three times a day. Before it shuts down, I get this screen that has a bunch of vertical lines. My iPhone 4 NEVER did this. I was going to take back to Verizon, but I figure they will try and give me the runaround so I scheduled an appointment at Apple on Thursday. I did the hard restart a couple times and tonight, I've already had it shut down and reboot 3 times after only being on my phone for 15 minutes. So annoying. Is Apple pretty good about replacing phones if they are having issues like this?

Well, I went to Apple and the guy said he could either reinstall the software, which they've usually found to work, or replace my phone which was less than a month old. They replaced it. I thought I was fine until it did it again this morning while I was in the app Words With Friends. This app was wehre it happened the majority of times before, but it did happen in other apps. At any rate, I have uninstalled that app to see if that has something to do with it. Maybe a faulty app? I pretty much set up the phone from new again, so either something is wrong with the operating system software on my Mac or there are some problems with the apps. The tech was able to run a diagnostic to see how many times it had been shutting down and rebooting. Do you Tim123444 or thegreengiant94 have Words With Friends (the paid for app) on your phone? Just curious. I think it has to do with the iOS 6.0.2 software....either that or I have two dud phones. I guess my next step will be going back to have them reload the software and asking if I should be uninstalling the apps I have and reinstalling them on my Mac. Your thoughts?

I am having the same issue with my iPhone 5 64gb. It shut off randomly but in my case it restart inmediately. How ever it occurs like 6 times per day, it is extremely annoying. This happend before and after I updated to iOS 6.0.2 and happend original as factory and with all my apps restored, so I think is hardware related, not software. We need to hear from Apple right away!!!
