iPhone 5 bluetooth handsfree- Incoming calls issue

When incoming calls come through my car, I can answer them from my steering wheel, but it transfers automatically to my cell and I have to go into my phone and change it manually to put the call back through to the handsfree bluetooth set.

The phone shows the "audio" feed icon, and in there are three options:

  • handsfree link
  • iphone
  • speaker

It seems that when I answer from my steering wheel, it automatically transfers to the "iPhone" option, and I have to go in manually and change it back to the "handsfree link" option to put it back through my car. I've looked in Settings to see if there is a way to make the handsfree option a default, but I don't see anything.

Anyone have any solutions or similar issues? Is there something I'm missing? This is my first iPhone.

The car is a 2006 Acura TL.

As a matter of fact, it does not appear that Apple has enough users advising them of this issue. I spoke tonight with the senior advisor who worked with me when I first experienced this problem, before I eventually returned my phone. I told him about this forum, and had written down at least 20 different car brands that you folks had mentioned had this problem. The advisor really downplayed this forum, and said that after selling 5 million Iphones, that if this problem existed with every Infiniti owner and every CRV owner, for example, who had bought an Iphone 5, they would have thousands of complaints, and they don't. So he was relatively dismissive. He also made it sound like the problem was with older bluetooth systems, even though I told him that many of you listed your cars as 2012 and 2013 models.

I too have a CRV 2012 and have been facing incoming calls problem of not connecting. I checked on Honda's web site and on their site Handsfreelink.ca. They are listing iPhone 5 incompatible on the incoming calls.

I believe they are already working with Apple on it. They have a note saying to visit the site again for updates.

hope this solves the anxiety for which we have to wait.

It is definetly the iPhone 5 where thee are problems with the incoming calls. All other functions are working on Honda CRV 2012.

As quoted before Honda lists on their site as "NOT COMPATIBLE" with cross marked on "incoming Calls".

They have a note saying they are in contact with Apple for the fix on the iPhone 5.

IT IS NOW FOR APPLE TO TAKE THE BLAME AND FIX IT QUICK OR ATLEAST ACCEPT THAT THEY ARE WORKING ON IT".

Thank you for giving the number out. Just talked to one of the advisors and he says that the Honda and Apple engineers are working on fixing the problem and should be done soon. Now how soon, there is no time given.

As such, just wait or return the iphone 5 and go back to iphone 4S which worked great. Still debating as I am on phone constantly on road and the car is my office.

I would also like to express my frustration with this very same issue. Hopefully Honda and Apple can resolve this problem as quickly as possible. It is misleading for dealers to claim that the system works with all iPhones when the 5 clearly has this problem. I will be calling Apple to hopefully put more pressure on them. At least I now know, that it's not just me....

Thanks for posting about this.

I phoned Apple support yesterday. The person with whom I spoke listened to me and supposedly took notes but hadn't heard of the issue, nor was he able to find any reference to it no matter what search terms he used (I don't know what Apple's system is for logging/searching issues but, he tried every combination we could think of). I'm curious as to what information was available to other advisors that would allow them to respond with "Honda and Apple engineers are working on fixing the problem and should be done soon" as Musicdolly reported given the experience I had.

Data point: the iPhone 5 works as it should when paired with my '08 Acura MDX (same funcationality as my iPhone 4). The issue (incoming calls can't hear or be heard) exists in my wife's '13 Acura RDX Tech when paired with either of our iPhone 5's.

An update to the original post. Got mail from Honda pointing out to the web page of Handfreelink for updates.

I was so frustrated that I kept on trying different methods on the CRV to fix it.

So here are the results- I stashed everything on it three times so that no data is left on Bluetooth. Erased all contents on the iPhone 5 Bluetooth data.

Went back and synchronized with he CRV. Still had a bit of problems of not connecting incoming calls and the reading of messages.

Here is the turn around. When you have incoming call- accept it and press for the second time. You will now able to talk.

How long it works, it is just to see. Till now no call ha been missed.

I have a 2013 Acura RDX. I have the same issue. Incoming calls are picked up but I can't hear anyone. If I answer the phone as if I was not on bluetooth, I can hear like a regular call but don't have hands free and whatever I was listening to on the audio continues. I was told by Acura that it is an Apple problem- that Apple would have to fix it- I called and left a complaint with Apple but I'm not optimistic on a fix anytime soon.

The Honda has to fix their Handsfreelink software and have heard that the engineers are working in doing so. The time being taken is too long when he iPhone 5 has been in the market for sometime.

Check with Honda/Acura as to when an update will be available with the dealership to update the system.

We should be calling them also plus Apple. Please post the success here.
