"Switch Users" button missing from lock screen

Does anyone have an ideas on this?

For some reason, I don't have a Switch User button on my lock screens, only Cancel and Guest. Maybe it's like this because of my settings with something? Whether allowing fast user switching would be an obvious question, but doesn't look like that's an option anymore - but regardless, yes even if I activley have multiple users logged in, it doesn't show up.

Maybe there's a terminal command i can use to force or reset something? It really seems like a bug.. as i'm only having this issue with one of my machines.

Thanks for any help.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  1. Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  2. When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  3. If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Ha! Got it!

Mentioning the accounts list got me thinking... I only had the one local account, therefore the logic is probably not considering the potential for network accounts to be available to switch to. So, I created an extra local test account to explore that theory.. and sure enough, now it's fixed.

This seems like a bug to me. If a network account server is set up, it seems this should be considered in the logic for the Switch User button.. hmph.

Thanks everyone, and especially you, Linc for your persistence. 🙂

Yeah, everything looks normal to me. I only have one local account, the rest are (local) network accounts. If I look at the list from a network account, it'll just show the account I'm looking at it from as well as the one local and Guest User account. If looking at it from the one local account, I'll just see that account and the Guest User account (no network accounts).
