Have you purchased the correct RAM for your Mac? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#2

Oct 6, 2012 4:56 AM in response to mende1by Maggie53,I hope so. I checked the Apple site, asked in an Apple store and purchased it from Crucial after having checked on their website and phoned them for advice. I have 2x2gb DDR2 - 667 SODIMM.
We have tried reinserting it twice and also tried with the old RAM in one slot and a new 2GB RAM in the other. No luck. The computer works fine (although very slowly) with the original 1gb RAM re-installed.

Oct 6, 2012 6:16 AM in response to Maggie53by rkaufmann87,★HelpfulThere are only three reasons the RAM won't work:
- Incorrect RAM
- Unseated RAM ( you have to press it in VERY VERY firmly using both thumbs and push hard)
- Failed RAM (yes RAM can and does fail on occasion)
I prefer dealing with OWC (www.macsales.com) due to their support and also that they specialize in Macs so you know their products work. Here is the page for RAM for mid 2007 iMacs:

Oct 6, 2012 7:02 AM in response to rkaufmann87by Maggie53,Thank you,
We have managed to successfully replace the 1gb with a 2gb in the original slot, however when we try putting either the original 1 or new 2gb in the unused slot there is a continual clicking and a blank screen when we turn the Mac on.
Will it actually take more than 2 gb?
