My MacBook is only updated to 10.5

and I just got an iphone 5. I can't sync my phone with my computer till I get the new itunes but that requires a bigger update. How do I go about updating? Do I have to purchase snow leopard, lion and mountain lion? Or can I just skip to mountain lion?

You can purchase Snow Leopard (10.6) from Apple and install and upgrade to that, then patch that Snow Leopard installation to 10.6.8, and that'll get you far enough forward for iTunes for your iPhone 5.

You would (still) need to purchase Snow Leopard to get to a newer OS X release (past Snow Leopard), assuming your Mac supports Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8).

Please see this thread and this thread for some related discussions, for Apple contact numbers, and links to the Apple version requirements.
