Upgrade to 10.5.8 to what? If you want to go from 10.5.8 (Leopard) to Snow Leopard first you need to determine if your machine can be upgraded to SL (currently 10.6.8) and beyond. To upgrade to SL 10.6.8 do the following. Call the on-line Apple Store (Apple's website) and order Snow Leopard, when it arrives follow the instructions that come with the DVD. Once SL is installed navigate to the 10.6.8 Update Combo and download and install following the on-screen instructions. Next run Software Update and install all suggested updates for your system. This will get it current. If you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8.2) after installing 10.6.8 and all it's updates open the Mac App Store and buy and install ML and run Software Update again. The system requirements for ML are:

General Requirements

  • OS X v10.6.8 or later
  • 2GB of memory (4GB highly recommended)
  • 8GB of available space
  • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
  • Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

Supported
Models

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)
