Will I be able to transfer my PC iTunes to an external hard drive and play the audio files directly in my Mac iTunes?

I am trying to figure out how to transfer my iTunes from a PC to a Mac. I want my iTunes to be housed solely on the external hard drive and was just wondering if the audio files on the external hard drive can be played on the Mac. Thanks.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You said you wanted the songs on the external drive to play on your Mac, if this is what you want (you're contradicting yourself here) say so.

("How will I be able to transfer my PC iTunes to the external if it is already formatted for a Mac?")

But assuming that you have your library on an external disc connected to a Mac it will need to be formatted for a Mac if you wish to play the songs from the external.
