I think that I have a 1st generation ipod touch. When I go to the setting menu then general there is no option to update. I'm connected to wi-fi but still can not connect to itunes? I reset it...

Sounds like you have an old iOS...you will need to plug it into a computer with iTunes and an internet connection and update that way.
iOS 5 introduces over-the-air updates.

The first generation iPod Touch runs version 3.1.3. See if that is what it says in Settings > General > About > Version.
when i plug it in it says that it's up to date
it says the version is 1.1.5 (4B1)
