No Small Caps in Pages 4.2. do you know any bug fix or workaround?

Hi there,

does anybody know a bug fix for Pages 4.2. so that one can use the small capital option of opentype fonts via the typography panel (cmd+T)?

I tried to reinsall the previous pages version on Mountain Lion which was free from this bug, but Mountain Lion does not accept the former Pages version either.

Thanks in advance!

If I remember right, you identified this bug last August already. It's unfortunate that Apple does not move to fix these things (also Pages still cannot display Apple Color Emoji, over a year after this font was included in OS X). I think the only solution to move to other apps.

To be fair Tom, Apple has been busy implementing the very long list of feature removals and other bugs that Users apparently requested! 😀

Of course when I wrote that in the fall of 2012 I had no idea how hard they were working on removing things. Pages 5 does finally recognize the Color Emoji font, but that is not much in the way of compensation...

Don't see how that would work.

Unicode fonts contain the necessary glyphs for the small caps.

Apple's text layout framework ATSUI does the work of substituting in the correct glyphs for the necessary characters. So it gets a Capital letter from the font for the first letter if necessary and a small cap character for the remaining lower case letters in the circumstance of "Small Caps" being the applied styling. That requires that the hooks have been written in place in Pages' code.

That is what appears to be missing/broken in the later versions of Pages/OSX.

Pages 5 doesn't even import external styles, as Pages '09 did, so I can't see what it is going to get from a previous version of Pages, nor how it could use it, when its code has been totally rewritten.

To Apple it probably ins't a bug! It probably ins't an over sight either!

Ha ha. Empathy with Apple. Very good.

From a logical point of view if it is neither a bug nor an over sight it follows Apple has deliberately included the non-functioning of a feature that has worked for some years without error for a purpose. Then what purpose is this?

The problem with the Small Caps and Capital letter is now also in the new OS X Yosemite and Pages 5.5., Numbers 3.5., and Keynote 6.5. It is the third OS X where the bug is included. I sent in the last two years at least 10 feedbacks to Apple, including via Developer platform, the official Feedback form and the Feedbackmanager of Yosemite Beta …
