It is important that the External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything.
The best way is taking the whole iTunes folder from the music menu in finder. Also , as Ana said , make sure that the External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).

i cant transfer music or movies to my toshiba hard drive. i tried opening in finder and transferring it don't work either

no i just keep getting the stop sign icon and then when i let go its like the stop icon jumps back to itunes
You are not doing it right. try oppening finder and then go to music. click on iTunes and press cmd-c to copy. than go to your hdd and press cmd-v to paste . this will only work from FINDER not from the iTunes app itself.
all it does is make a beeping sound and nothing moves.....omg this *****
