Copying fonts - show up as .exe files in 10.4.6

I have purchased a G5 and a Mac Mini, both running OS 10.4.6. I am trying to load fonts onto the machines but when I copy them to the users/shared folder they show up as Unix executable files. I use FontAgent Pro 3 and usually store fonts in users/shared/font folder and import them without any problem.

I have tried copy from both a server and directly from a disk.

Why are these not copying correctly? I have never seen a font show up as an exe file. It's very weird.

Any ideas?

They are Font Suitcase and Postscript Type 1 outline fonts. I have been using them without any problems on all my machines until this G5 and Mac Mini which are running 10.4.6. Could it be a compatibility issue with the Intel chip? I would think not, but this is unexplainable.

I am running 10.4.5 on my PB G4 without issues. I'm glad I haven't run the update, and I'm not sure I should. This has been a real challenge and a frustrating experience. I'm about to call Apple, but was hoping to make headway here.

Where are the original copies of the fonts? In other words, do you have a copy of the fonts on your PowerBook where they appear and work fine? And you're having problems when you try to transfer the files to your G5 and Mac Mini?

It will help to focus in on one method of transferring them from one Mac to another. Do you have an external hard drive or floppy drive that you can use to move the files between the Macs, or do you need to do it over the network?

Correct. The CPU doesn't have anything to do with it. There have been other posts here though with people having trouble with fonts on the new Macs.

That said, there isn't (shouldn't be) any problem with fonts on an Intel based Mac. Are you keeping the Type 1 PS fonts together? That is, the suitcase of screen fonts and printer outline fonts in the same folder? It's required for those types of fonts in order for them to work.

And one other thing. If you try and copy them over while they are active (in a Fonts folder) on the other Mac, that won't work either. Make copies of them on the source Mac first to a dummy folder that is not inside any of the Fonts folder. The desktop will do. Then copy those duplicates over.

All the fonts are well organized, and yes, all grouped appropriately - we're a graphics team and while we don't claim to be font experts, we've dealt with the usual font issues that designers run into. We've never seen anything like this.

I'm re-copying to a desktop folder AND will try exporting out of FontAgent Pro 3. I'll burn both folders from the desktop to a disk and try to load on the new machines that way. Supposedly, another member of my team had already tried something like this, but I'm not sure they made their best effort. Hopefully, one of them will work.

Thanks for your input, and cross your fingers. 🙂

I'm having the exact same problem...I checked out a font on a G3 (OS 9 and OS 10 both) and it shows up as a PostScript Font with 72 KB...then I checked it out on the Mac Mini and it shows up as an Unix Executive File with Zero KB...any ideas?

I experienced the same problem copying fonts on the same drive from one user to another from within terminal using the cp command. I found the solution in the macoshints forums:

the cp command does not tend to the resource forks some app files have, effectively corrupting them.

instead, use the command ditto -rsrc

see the ditto man pages

It worked and I learned another new command.
