Body odor smell on keyboard

My ibook seems to have a strong odor (much like BO) coming from the keyboard...I know this has been brought up before. I was just wondering if there was any cure besides replacing the keyboard. Maybe a spray or something?

ibook, Mac OS X (10.3.2)

Ok i've heard about this problem a lot, But with the whole computer. What happends is when the computer starts the melt the Keyboard and the outside of ur computer after time you'll get that bad smell. So what you need to do is get a new keyboard from apple. Just Mail your computer to California and the'll get you a new keyboard.

To be clear, did you use 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water for your solution, or the other way around?

A mustache brush or eyelash (mascara) brush may be a good alternative to the toothbrush (because it's smaller).

Thanks for posting with your solution. It may help someone else.

I do think there's something else going on here, though. I have not seen any of the iBook G4's with this problem. (On the G4's, the key markings wear off the keys.)

I've had the same problem for awhile now. It will fill my small bedroom with the smell of BO. You don't notice how bad it is until you leave the room and come back.

I've noticed though that if you get right down to the keyboard and smell it, it kind of smells like an old train set. The little tiny electrical ones. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone but that seems to be the close-up smell. I don't know if that means anything but I thought it was interesting.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

Things I have recommended in the past:

I think I'd try a sweetly scented fabric softener sheet (the kind you use in the dryer) closed in the iBook at night and see if that will at least alleviate the stench somewhat.

If my keyboard were one of the smelly ones, I would try using Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer on it in this manner:

Remove the keyboard. You don't have to remove it completely, just lift it up and flip it over and lay it on the palm rests and trackpad. I wouldn't put any liquid over on the left side where the shield over the innards is perforated, but on the right underneath side of the keyboard, I would try dipping a Q-Tip into the Renuzit Super Odor Neutralizer and swabbing the under side of the keyboard. Allow it to dry over night before reassembling.

If this doesn't do it, I would repeat the procedure, and, in addition, dab the center of each key with the Odor Neutralizer. Again, allow to dry over night.

You may have to repeat the procedure if the smell comes back.

I have not had this problem, but this is what I would do (if I did) before resorting to buying a new keyboard.

How funny! I just worked on my ibook today to rid it of the stink. It's all the little pieces of junk that gets stuck under the keys on the keyboard, and the body oils and stuff that gets stuck on the keyboard and body. I used a dry toothbrush to pull the crap out from under the keys, and then used a solution of white vinegar diluted 1/3 of water on a barely damp washcloth. Take the keyboard off, it's easy to do. Then wipe the keys after using the dry toothbrush, then wipe the body of the ibook. No more stink.
