Are iPOd software update servers are down on 10/5/12?
I am getting "iPOd software update server could not be contacted" and have followed the instructions to check network, etc. Is it possible the servers are down?

Yes. Wait a couple of hours or try again.
It could also be due to your older version of iTunes on your older system Mac OS X system running Panther. If possible, connect the iPod to a newer version of iTunes.
