Aperture 3.4.1 changes the colors of my previously processed RAW files!

I am revisiting some projects that I worked on in the last couple of months and am assembling a portfolio. When I was trying to choose my favorites I noticed in disbelief that some of my carefully editited and color graded photos looked great in the preview (as I remembered them) but once the "loading" sign disappeared turned horrible with hightlights and different colors!

Mind you, I am not talking about the handling of RAW files after an import. It happens months after import and post-processing has happened and was behaing beautifully. Basically 2000 photos are screwed up this way and I'd have to painfully recreate the raw files by the (still existing) proper previews/thumbnails???

I am thoroughly confused and it would be great if someone could give me some pointers to the dilemma (or even confirm a bug in that regard)

Thanks, Louis

I just did a quick test and this problem is only happening with images taken by my Canon 7D. Raw images taken with a Nikon D50 a few years ago are unaffected. Also, it doesn't just do it to photos that have been edited, its any raw photo. When you double click on a raw photo taken by a canon camera, the image becomes less contrasty and darker.

@aye es oh

I have a Nikon D7100 and a Canon T3i, it affects the Canon pics only so far.

And nope, not touched them in the last two months.

If I make a copy of the original and then stamp them with the previously working setting it almost comes back to how I post-processed them, but I still have to do final tweaking to get them exactly back to that state.

This is painful, like in unacceptable! I am so bummed out.

Does anyone know if I can roll back my library to a previous versions?

Or whether Apple is aware of it? If not any leads as to where to bug report to?

Hi William,

so yes, your advice def helped at least in tracking down which files are affected. Thanks for the pointer!

I have 4900 RAW files having been processed by RAW V3.0 and 972 by RAW V4.0

The ones that show the changed post-processing results are all processed by RAW v3.0.

So now that we know/have verified that, what could I do?

I am loosing really important material everytime I ( now) accidentally click on one of my processed files. Weeks of tweaking down the drain...

I'm confused as to why it is automatically reprocessing the files to RAWv4. It shouldn't be. None of my files were reprocessed without my manually telling Aperture to update.

You may wish to use Aperture's "submit feedback" to send details to Apple on the fact that Aperture is automatically updating the RAW processing from v3 to v4, and changing the default rendering.

In general I'd expect RAWv4 to be better than RAWv3, but it's different, and on pre-adjusted images if it's a default rendering it would be a problem, as you'd want to re-adjust to account for the different rendering. I also wish there were some documentation out there on what's changed...

Nah, "Highlight Priority Mode" was switched off.

Here's the examples:

1. This is my finished picture. The information is still avaliable in the preview. So this is what I wanted it to look like and how I remembered it.

2. This is how Aperture makes it look now!!!

3. This is what it looks like when I make a copy from the original and then stamp the old settings onto it.

Go figure. It's just random and did I mentioned that I am deeply frustrated with an otherwise excellent program? :-)

If this is bound to happen with our pictures, how can we reliably work with this? I have paying clients who come back to me months and years after and need to have access to their stock of photos.
