You have to purchase the Snow Leopard install disks from the Apple Store - just search on Snow Leopard. The US Store page for it is here:

I have the same problem. I need to install Snow Leopard, but do I loose all my data if I install this? If so, I have made a back up with time machine on an external drive but how do I know if this back up is good? I'm afraid that once I install it, I loose everything. My Mac is running MAC OS X 10.5.8 now.

    Does anybody now? Thank you

As long as your Mac is suitable for Snow Leopard you can install it without losing any of your data, it simply overwrites the older System. However you should always have a solid backup before embarking on any complex upgrade. If you can access your older files on Time Machine the backup should be OK. If you can run to an extra exernal had disk you could also make a clone of your hard disk - you can then restore the entire disk from that should something go wrong (not particularly likely but you should cover your back).

I am so disappointed. just got the iphone 5 a couple weeks back, still have the macbook with OSX 10.5.8, tried to sync my new phone and went through a bunch of failed downloads and support posts to figure out I need to spend MORE money to upgrade. I'm constantly in an argument about why Macs are better than pc's but as it turns out, pc users aren't forced to fork out more cash to upgrade (and this is still a perfectly good machine for what I use it for - emails, word processing, web), especially after they just purchased a brand new, expensive apple product. give me a break. this is looking like my last apple computer and i guess my last apple product altogether. they look nice and they're innovative but for the price and the bs, i'm just not that devoted. or dumb. i'm not saying that i'm going to make it my mission to get a stolen version of snow leopard (shouldn't be too hard), nor would I ever try to rip the company off at every turn from here on out... although i bet i could figure out ways to do it. i'm just saying that my next laptop will not be a mac. it will cheaper, last longer, and it will run f*ing itunes 10.7 or whatever even if i don't have snow leopard or lion or whatever other cat they come up with. actually, i might even update my new iphone 5 using windows xp.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x

It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.

    Do this first...

Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...

    Snow Leopard Tech Specs

    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575

If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

    Other countries...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard and iTunes.

You should now be able to Sync your iPhone 5.

Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
