upgraded from iPhoto 09 to 11 and lost all my photos

I just upgraded to iPhoto 9.4.1 and while it was "converting" my photo library it crashed. Now I have lost virtually all of the photos.

I have a backup of the library but it is not recognized by the new iPhoto. Can I safely downgrade?

Have you looked inside your iPhoto Library package

to verify that there are no image files in the Masters' subfolders? If they are there it's just the database file that's damaged and you can try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

  • Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  • Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  • Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
  • In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  • Click on the Create button.

  • Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Also what do you mean that iPhoto doesn't recognize your backup library? How did you back it up and where is it located?

    Thank you, Old Toad.

I will try Fix #1 tomorrow night. I am hoping that it is just a database problem. I will report back afterward.

My old library is backed up on an external drive and also online with Carbonite (I halted Carbonite's auto backing up of the iPhoto libraray immediately. I did not try to use the backup because I read in iPhoto that once it's updated to iPhoto 11, it will not recognize older library.

upgraded from iPhoto 09 to 11 and lost all my photos
