can ipod touch 3 get ios 5

Can the Ipod touch 3rd Gen get IOS5 and above? I have been trying but itunes just says "Your softwear is up-to-date (4.2.1)" So I would like to get IOS5 or 6 but it wont let me. Can anyone help?😕

Only the 4th generation iPod touch supports iOS 6

Are you sure it is a 3rd generation iPod?

The specs for that iPod say it can be upgraded beyomd 4.2.1

It is the 2nd generation iPod that is limited to that level of iOS

If it is an 8 or 16 GB iPod, then it is 2nd generation (a 32 GB can be either 2nd or 3rd). Model A1288 is 2g, model A1388 is 3g.
