My iphone 5 goes "no service".
When my iphone 5 goes out of network, "no service" shows. But the phone doesn't search for network, even if there is, untill I tell the phone to search for network. Why?
iPhone 5, iOS 6

Hi NFH, are you connected to BT Openzone Wifi (or similar)? It may be picking that wifi signal up on exit from the tube.
Not the Tube. As you use the Tube, I assume you live in London and know that the Blackwall Tunnel is a major road tunnel. I don't believe there is any wifi at the northern exit, whether BT Openzone or otherwise; nevertheless I do use BT Openzone but with auto-join turned off.

Sorry yes, just a typo - I use the Blackwall tunnel every now and then, and I live in London. Even though you don't use Auto-join, I think the phone still recognises the connection - and may even display the wifi symbol - although I could be wrong! Maybe you could 'forget this network' on BT Openzone before your next journey and see.

Even simpler, I'll just turn off wifi on my iPhone every day on my journey to work, and I'll report back within a week or two whether it has made any difference.

Thanks NFH. I guess if it does solve it, the next problem will be whether Orange or Apple take responsibility!
Well, I'm still hoping this software issue will be resolved with iOS 6.1 (which apparently went for a beta 5 version and not the golden master). So obviously well be stuck with unPhones a while longer. Just though I'd bring it up, if you haven't already seen it. Osxdaily has obviously been aware of this issue since sept 2012, and are referring to it as a "bug" and software issue. Obviously, this has been an issue since that one and it is embarrassing that it has not ben resolved.
It has not been resolved because it's probably down to dodgy antennas
in the phone, which cannot be fixed by software.(In my opinion).
Yes, I remember your arguments from before. I have also stated that I am 100% sure that this is irrelevant to my issues.
This is not a statement on your opinion, I'm sure you have good reasons for your theory on the faulty antenna. This is my own opinion; I never, ever loose signal during regular use and I only loose signal when "under ground", when outside of range, as would happen with any phone on the market. Hence, in my opinion, it cannot be a faulty antenna. This is supported by the fact that turning airplane-mode on and off leads to instant reconnection. If the antenna was broken or faulty, this action would not lead to a regained signal. As I have stated, reconnecting to cellular network does not, and have not, been dependent on moving parts in the unit for as long as iPhones have been manufactured, hence nothing inside the unit changes. There are no modifications to the hardware occurring when switching airplane mode on and off. Hence, hardware should (In my case and by logical deduction) be irrelevant to the issue.
I also think that if the antenna was the issue, apple would probably just replace faulty antennas and not provide new units or return non-functional units to the customers? If it was hardware, my guess is that it would probably be the modem and not the antenna.
This is only my opinion and is by no means a reflection on your. Since iOS 6.1 has been rumored to fix the issue, I guess we'll know for sure pretty soon. If this issues goes away with the update, it is software. If it doesn't, I'll be the first in line to demand a Galaxy S4 as a replacement from my provider. Since I want a fully functional iPhone 5, my fingers are crossed while waiting for iOS 6.1,
// Gus
anyone using iOS 6.0.1 who has the same issue? I only encounter this issue after i upgraded to iOS 6.0.2, happened again this morning...it just cut off all of a sudden and all i need to do is reset and its back to normal again. Am also asking my friends not to get the 5S if it is launch! until the issue is fixed. Agree with gusgrave, considering S4!
Hi again i5 User. I had upgraded the first two but not the third and the third one has done the same thing once so far. I have also changed provider since upgrading the third and so far has not failed yet.
Hi Gus, your logic also fits with my experiences. Hardware would give low signal strength, but the fact that it locks up and will not restart once the signal is strong again does seem to point to a software issue. Thanks for providing your input, which has been very helpful. I don't think there was any point any guy giving you a hard time just because he has a different point of view. The whole point of this forum is to get everyones point out there and the pattern will soon be there for all to see, and hopefully Apple will finally recognise they have a problem and are losing users to Samsung because of their lack of action. I'm on my third i-phone 5(bought two and had one replaced and then traded the replacement one back for my cash when the second failed). The one I kept was for my wife, but She is happy for me to buy her another brand so she doesn't get hung out to dry on this issue. I like this phone but have also been very close to cashing this one in also. Reading these forums has kept me in the fold a little bit longer, in the hope that a fix may be somewhere close?
iOS 6.1 has been released ! Not holding out much hope that it has fixed this issue. It doesn't mention it in the details!! Will just have to wait and see. Will not be happy if it hasn't as that will almost certainly prove that it is hardware and cannot be fixed.
Updated to 6.1 last night. Within 5 minutes I had the dreaded "no service" issue.
In my case I have to switch the phone to "airplane mode" and back again to get a signal.
I've got an iPhone 1, 3GS and 4S all with the same provider (O2) and none of them have this problem.
I've swapped SIM, reset the phone, done a full restore. No improvement.
Just to be very clear (long thread!) - iPhone 5 (32Gb white). iOS 6.1. In circumstances where signal is weak (two bar - at home in my case) once the phone goes in to standby, around 80% of the time I get "no service" until I switch on/off airplane mode. If I switch off 3G (I'm not in a 3G area anyway) then the issue reduces to around 30% of the time. When using the phone to make or receive a call, the quality is excellent and I don't get any dropped calls.
Placed a call with Apple, but don't hold up much hope!
There is no hope whatsoever !! This is something we will have to live with
or move away from Apple!
I don't want to speak too soon but I updated to 6.1 this morning and I am having no issues. I am currently at work where I have always had the "no service" issue but since the update this morning it has been working well.
Same here. Seems fixed now. After 4 months!
My iphone 5 goes "no service".
