Installing Seagate GoFlex Desk USB 3.0

After reading GMAN76 and FlashInPan's review "Works Fine for Me... Now" on the Seagate forum, I simply started with reformatting the drive as the first step out of the box. I have had an old Seagate hardrive for years to back up my PC and it has worked flawlessly so I was willing to give this hard drive a chance

- just not the IMac integration software.

I recommend using a combination of GMAN75 and FlashInPan's instructions to use this drive with an IMac/Time Machine. Take the drive out of the box and plug it in. Do NOT select any of the integrate with Time Machine or install software options - Sorry Seagate, but after reading the reviews regarding your integration software, I was not going to take the chance. Instead, go straight to the IMac Disk Utility and follow these steps.

1. Open IMac "Disk Utility"

2. Select "Erase" tab.

3. Select Format "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" and add your title in the "Name" field

4. Select Erase.

After the "Erase" Task completes...

5. Select the "Partition" tab

6. Enter your name for the drive in the "Name" field

7. Select in the "Format" field, "Mac OS Extended (journaled)"

8. Enter 3 in the "Size" field - If you have a 3TB drive

9. Near the +- buttons, select the "Options" button. Click on the "Options" Button and there you can see three types of Partition Tables - GUID Partition table , Apple Partion Map, Master Boot Record. Select the "GUID" partition type and partition the drive. Select "OK"

10. Select "Apply"

You are done. Open Time Machine and start using the drive. I backed up 200 GB of data in approximately 3 hours with no hiccups. The drive is quite, has behave properly, to include sleep mode, and continues to function with Time Machine as scheduled.
