Remote App and Apple TV

I am trying to use the remote app for my Apple TV, however, I cannot control the Apple TV to turn on home sharing in order for my remote app to work. How do I access home sharing on my Apple TV with remote app?

For clarification, I do not have a physical remote (lost it), therefore I need to know how to use the remote app to control the device. Advice?

You will have to get a new Apple remote I'm afraid. Without the home sharing turned on, the remote app won't connect I don't belive.
