iPhoto 9.4.1 crashes opening pictures

Hi there,

I'm having problems using iPhoto after ML upgrade. I can navigate through the albuns and rename and even split albuns but as soon as I open any picture it crashes.

I already tryed all the methods I could find on google including:

1) Creating a new library

2) Creating a new mac user

3) option + command and Repair Permissions/Rebuild Thumbnails/Repair Database/Rebuild Database

And so far, no success. I even tryed deleting some preferences files and moving Quicktime components.

When I try the slideshow it works fine but as soon as I close the full screen of the slideshow it crashes again.

Any help?

Thanks

To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

/var/db/receipts/

2c: on 10.7 they're at

/private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

Hi Terrance,

Not sure if I should be creating a new question for this, but I appear to have the identical problem to felipefromburnaby. iPhoto 9.4.1 crashes a second or two after double clicking to open a photo. I can see the thumbnails flickering as I move the mouse over an Event, I can run a slideshow of an event that shows the photos perfectly (although it crashes when I close the slideshow). I can open the master images from within the iPhoto library with Preview. I have done the following with no solution:

  • rebuilt the Library permissions and repaired the Library
  • moved the iPhoto application to the Trash and re-installed from the App store (including deleting items with iPhoto in the title from the various receipts folders)
  • re-installing OSX from the Recovery menu as you suggested immediately prior to this post - which was very simple as you said it would be!

I have also disabled PhotoStream from all my iOS devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones and the iMac that is running iPhoto).

I have Time Machine - should I restore a backup of the library from a month or so ago when the problem wasn't happening? I'm struggling to pin down when this started - I think it might have been after the recent 9.4.1 upgrade but can't be sure.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I haven't done anything with .plist files that you have suggested to other users with problems of iPhoto crashes, although that problem seemed slightly different in that it was linked to opening the preferences pane. I also don't appear to have a 3ivx folder / app which was the cause of other users' problems, although I do have Flip4Mac installed - but haven't done anything with it recently, so would struggle to see the linkage.

I will post the error message I get next time it crashes (a few minutes - it's currently rebuilding the library again).

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is the error message I get. I remembered I tried a couple of other things:

- creating another user account, creating a library in iPhoto and importing a couple of photos. Same problem - which would suggest it isn't a problem with my main iPhoto library?

- doing the same from my own account.

Hello felipe... Bummer that we seem to have got some mysterious bug afflicting iPhoto. I can't think of an association with Flip4Mac - it has been there installed for ages (over a year?) and not upgraded to my knowledge. The iPhoto problem seems to have just magically "appeared" - although this is obviously not the case, there must have been some change that precipitated it. I'm fairly sure it was the most recent upgrade from Apple which must be clashing with something. But it's really hard to know what - definitely nothing in my library, as the test of creating a new library, importing just one photo and then opening it demonstrated. Must be something buried pretty deep, and probably present in another program, if re-installing OSX and iPhoto doesn't fix the problem.

Doing Recovery was genuinely painless, so you might want to try it too - maybe you have better luck.

Now, it turns out that I also have Aperture 3 installed, which can access iPhoto libraries seamlessly (i.e. you see everything looking identical, albums etc). And it is working just fine. So I can still access all my pics and update my library. You could buy it - it's not that expensive - although on my 2010 iMac it runs quite a bit slower than iPhoto (which is why I'd switched back to iPhoto as complement to Lightroom).

I think I will most likely just wait until the next iPhoto update and hope it fixes things.

Good luck - let me know if you have any luck!

J.

Meanwhile 9.5 is out and I am having the same problem after restoring my macbook with time machine after HD crash. Don't you think restoring your mac with time machine and apple time capsule is an easy task. It took me ages to get all these apps run again. However, there seems no solution for the iPhoto issue. It seems somehow more promising to clean your HD entirely, install the system and then the apps one by one manually. Or is there someone out there with the golden hint?
