imessage conversations out of order?

I'll add myself to the list of affected users. Running Mavericks. iOS 7. Connected devices are Mid-2011 iMac, iPhone 5C, and Mid-2009 MacBook Pro.

So frustrating. I've sumbitted feedback a number of times as well.

Here's the really strange part: iMessages are only out of order on the Mid-2009 Macbook Pro. All good on iMac and iPhone.

UPDATE: I've cross-checked all settings for iCloud and iMessages. Another difference between my iMac and MacBook Pro is that, even though the settings are entirely identical, I'm also not seeing the random chat bubble colors on my MBP.

Funny thing is, after I upgraded to Mavericks I haven't seen this issue once. In fact it seems like they added logic to messages to properly "reorder" the conversations once opening the application.

I have seen this problem on all my Macs since Messages Beta on Lion.

Also, searching FINALLY works without crashing Messages. This has honestly been a bigger issue to me than the out of order problem.

As you say, every device I have, EXCEPT my MacBook Pro (also running Mavericks) is behaving perfectly - in fact, much better than before Mavericks. I can't figure out what it is about this one machine...

Using two Macs to receive AIM or Jabber (and Yahoo) Messages is difficult to set up to see all the IMs at the same time on both computer.

iMessages should however appear on all devices using the Apple ID.

iMessages sent from a Mac can be Coloured and "Fonted" in that the Preferences > Messages/Viewing allows you to set the Colour of the Background then the Font and possibly the text colour if you wish.

iPhones/iPads only send in white/clear as the iOS only colours the Send text balloon/bubble on the device so you know if it went iMessages or SMS.

I am also wondering if the MacBook Pro had the OS X 10.8.4 update prior to getting to Mavericks.

It was in this update that Apple claimed they ahd sorted one cause of the out or order messages and I and wondering if you need "all parts" as it were.

I had had the 10.8.4 update before upgrading to Mavericks on my Early 2013 Retina MBP, and I migrated to my Late 2013 (new Haswell) Retina MBP yesterday using Migration Assistant. Neither machine has issues right now with out of order messages.

It would certainly be interesting if musickevin didn't have the 10.8.4 update on his one that isn't working.

Hmm. Very interesting thought, Ralph and ibrennan, regarding 10.8.4. And I appreciate the consideration.

I have indeed applied every incremental update that Apple has released.

And regarding the message bubble colors, it's obviously not a big deal, but I am noticing it as another difference between Messages on my MBP and my iMac. Even though settings are identical everywhere (iCloud, Internet Accounts and Messages), my iMac shows the random colors and my MBP doesn't.

I have nothing else at the moment.

Funny thing happened this morning. I was using my iMac to send messages and I watched as they literally put themselves out of order. When I first started using the app this morning, all was well. I was in the middle of typing a new message when suddently the chat bubbles shuffled themselves around putting today's messages above yesterdays. This is getting weird.

That does sound really odd.

If we have just the Messages app on a Mac using an Apple ID for iMessages then when it Sends and Receives iMessages they are time stamped by the server.

Like IMs over AIM and Jabber services there is no other method of ordering them as I see it.

However when an iOS device is added into the mix they seem to get the iMessages "first" and the Mac version gets a sync "copy" of that.

Although this shows the Time Stamp it seems to rely on the Push times from the server which may not match the Time Stamps as such.

Why they would reorder themselves later is a complete mystery.

I can only see that there would be the Server push time and the Original Time stamp.

Any chance that the iMessages have been sorted alphabetically (i.e. in order of the first letter for instance) ?

I'm also on the list of people whose messages get out of order. I've actually watched them "disappear" while exchanging messages, only find them further up the conversation thread, and out of order chronologically. I'm using OS X Mavericks 10.9. It only happens on my desktop machine -- not on my iPhone or iPad. Anybody come across a fix yet?

I am also having trouble on my MacBook Pro. I prefer to use that for imessage conversations, easier to type, etc. The messages show up out of order, disappear in front of my eyes, etc .Very irritating! The messages also do not show up with my contacts name, they come in under the phone number, which is aggravating. The same person on my iphone will show up with their name and their picture. Anyone know how to fix that?

Maybe this will help some of you....

2 days ago I went into the Library/Messages folder on my MBP and deleted the 3 db files in that folder. NOTE: Be sure to save any photos, attachments or chats (if you can -- I'm not sure how to save or archive them). Just be aware that deleting the 3 db files will erase all your conversations. But if you're like me, frustration may be requiring more Draconian methods.

After deleting the 3 files, logout, then login, and empty your trash. Launch messages again and see if it does a better job of keeping track of the messages chronologically as you go forward. So far, Messages has been syncing up perfectly with my iPhone and iPad, and doing it faster -- almost instantly.

Check your Mac version of Contacts and see if they have the iPhone Numbers that the iPhone version has.

You would then have a choice of Syncing them via iTunes or via iCloud.

In my experience iTunes tends to be one way (Mac to iPhone) where as the iCloud method allows the data in both directions.

So if you are out with a Contact and have your iPhone with you any changes you make to their Card is changed on the Mac as well.
