Importing music from external hard drive to ITunes Library?

I recently downloaded my ITunes Library from an Apple G4 to an external hard drive in order to backup the music and protect it from loss. Now I would like to import the music from the hard drive to another computer on which I also have ITunes installed. Some of the songs are already installed on the other computer, a Dell with Windows XP, but I would like to install the whole library there if possible. I would appreciate it if someone could help me.

Alright:

First, the 'dot' files (.trashes, .library, etc) are just files that Mac OS X puts on the drive. They're invisible in OS X. Similarly, Windows puts files (System Volume Information and Recycling Information) onto its drives, also invisble when running XP, but visible on OS X.

Maybe I wasn't clear:

We're trying to get it so that the music all runs off of the external drive. So right now, there should be no music on the Dell, everything should be on the external.

From here on out, every time I refer to iTunes on the Dell, I mean the program, not the folder. Forget Windows Explorer.

Go to edit\prefs\advanced, and uncheck 'keep iTunes folder organizes' and 'copy to iTunes folder when adding to library'.

Now, change the folder listed in the box (use the Browse option) to the external's Music folder. This will ensure that all future music added via iTunes (CDs and the Music Store) goes to that folder.

Now, go back to the external drive, and drag the music into the iTunes library, within the iTunes application.

If all of your settings are right, it should just add references to the music to the library, with all of the files still sitting on the external where we want them.

Please let me know if it works and/or if there are any more questions.

Here we go again. I'm sure you're getting tired of me; I know I'm getting frustrated, but I feel like I'm getting close. I followed your last instructions as close as I could, but I may not be clear on everything judging from the result. I unchecked the 2 items under edit/prefs/advanced. I used "Browse" to change the folder in the box. I found WDPassport (F:) and hit change. The box then showed F:\.

I then went to the ext. drive using My Computer, found WD Passport and dragged it to Library at the top of the column on the left side of the ITunes application page (with columns "song name", "artist," "album," "genre," etc. I do not see any references to the music in the library, and if they are there, I don't know how to access them. I do have one additional question: If and when I am able to find those references that are supposed to be there, will I be able to read all of the music information (song name, etc.) in the ITunes application even though the music physically resides on the ext. drive? I am sure the answer to that is "Yes", but I don't know if it will just come up or how I will bring it up from the ext. drive. That question probably puts the cart before the horse, since I'm not able to see anything in ITunes right now anyway. Thanks again.

Don't give up on me yet. Maybe we're getting there. Here's what I did: File>Add Folder to Library. Browsed to WD Passport (F:)>Open. Nothing visably happened.

I tried to do File>Import>Look in WDPassport(F:), Filename :\Library.txt. All I got was the message: "Some of the songs in the file "library.txt" were not imported because they could not be found." Of course, none were imported because none were found. What now, Boss?

Hey, I think maybe I figured something out. This morning I am getting two messages that I haven't gotten before. One says that "The Generic USB Hub will function at reduced speed. You must add a Hi-Speed host controller to the computer to obtain maximum performance." The other says "There are no Hi-Speed USB host controllers installed on this computer."

The USB Hub that I have is a Belkin and says on the bottom that it is a Hi-Speed 2.0 4-port hub. I am going to head out to Best Buy to see whether I need a different hub; I'm assuming that I do. I'll let you know what happens.

Well, the trip to Best Buy was a bust, I guess. Apparently the hub that I'm using is a Hi-Speed Hub (2.0), and I couldn't do any better unless I installed a new 2.0 board in my laptop. I wouldn't mind doing that buy the Best Buy guy didn't think that would help unless maybe my computer USB ports are less than 2.0.

So, I'm still lost. In answer to your last question about whether I'm sure the music is on the ext. drive, I am pretty sure. If I click on the Library, I get song info on my screen . It isn't organized like in ITunes, but I see familiar stuff like Frank Sinatra, etc. It appears that I just can't get it over to ITunes. Could it be a copyright thing with ITunes?

As far as I can tell, here's where we are:

All of the music is on the external. As far as the Mac is concerned, everything is fine. It's the PC that's giving you issues.

On Windows, the iTunes library is empty.
The external hard drive is being read, albeit slowly, because you're limited to USB 1. (btw, if you have a desktop, you can get a card for really cheap. I got one for my PC for 8 bucks.)
When attempting to add the library to the PC, nothing happens.

<hr>

Two things:

*If you truly are limited to USB 1, regardless of the reason we're getting stuck here, running your library off of the external will be inconvenient anytime you decide to do soemthing that requires access to more than one song (like burning a CD, transfering to an iPod).
*Can you try adding one song from the external to the iTunes library?

I noticed this person did not respond to your reply, but I am having a similar problem. I have recorded all of my music on an external drive and I want to load this into my library and run off the external. My initial attempt caused the majority of my songs on the hard drive to duplicate (sometimes triples). I had approximately 10,000 songs that are now 25,000 with all the copies.

Is there an easy way to remove the copies without going thru every folder/file and deleting them manually? I spent 3 hours doing it manually and I am only 10% thru.

What is the proper way to import from the external to the library? Can I import all songs at once? I am running Windows XP. Thank you in advance for your help.

Would you like the music to run off of the external
drive, or copy onto the internal?

Well, it's a major PITA. The best and easiest way is to just clear the library and reimport the library.

In edit\prefs\advanced, make sure both 'copy files to library folder' and 'keep library folder organized' are unchecked, then just import the data from the external. Nothing should be duplicated, and everything should work just fine.

There may be a way around that.

First, shut iTunes.

Then go to My Music\iTunes.

Move the .itl and .xml files to the desktop.

Now, in the iTunes Music folder within the iTunes folder, check the contents. Presumably, that's where everything was copied to.

Again, assuming you have all of the music on the external, and that's where you're going to run the music off of, you can clear the entire folder.

Then restart iTunes, and the library will be clear.

Then confirm the setting changes from before.

Then import again, and you should have exactly what you have now, minus all of the old copies.
