Hiw to save a file to *any* location

Why is is that when you are downloading a file using any web browser the only choices you are given are the desktop, and the shortcuts you have created in finder?

Am I missing something?

Why can't I tell Safari/firefox/camino to save files anywhere on the hard drive?

Hi Richard,

First, thanks for answering both of my questions.

Second, yes, this is fine, but what if I want to download files directly to a specific location rather than one general location.

It's like this. I have a "downloaded" folder which contains various categories such as "messaging clients", "ftp prgrams", "screen savers", etc.

Often I come across a new application I wish to download that fits into one of these categories, but I am not given the option of saving the file to the folder in question. I MUST download the file to the generic location, then move it to its permenant home later. I don't like the double handling.

Is there a way to fix this?

You're right, I do handle the files. I install the application, read the document, etc but I also sort and store the file into the directory structure on my hard drive.

I know it seems petty, but I don't like to download file file, THEN move it to the right locations, THEN open it. Why don't I have the option to put the file where I want it in the first place?

Most web browsers allow me to open the file directly from the download window, so there is no need to goto the desktop or anywhere else to get the latest files.

Apples products are good because they sweat the details. Maybe this is a detail they considered and rejected. Maybe adding this sort of feature is too confusing for the average user? After all, no application in OS X allows me to save a file anywhere (unless I create a shortcut to the folder on the shelf).

I am a recent switcher I am just accustomed to how Windows and Linux operates. On a side note: installing an application for the first time was an eye opener. "What? I just drag the icon into the Applications folder? That's it!?"
