"Itunes cannot recognise this iPod at this time".

Hello!

I am trying to use an iPod Nano that I was given as a gift. When I plug it into the USB port on my computer I get the message "iTunes cannot recognise this iPod at this time"?

I have two questions, if I may, please:

1. Why is this happening, and

2. How can I get round this, please?
