Q: How do I get my Macbook pro to recognize my HDMI cable as a sound output option?

I am having problems getting my (older - 3 years old) Macbook pro to recognize my HDMI cord as a sound output option. I go to output choices in system preferences and the only option is the internal speakers. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, were you able to fix it? If you were able to could you please share what you did. Many thanks!

Macbook Pros, about 2009, do not have mini display ports that carry sound. You must use the MDP for video only and the speakers or audio out for sound. What model/year is your Macbook Pro?

You can find a list of models that support audio over hdmi on this page. If yours doesn't support audio over hdmi, you could run a separate line, an optical cable from your headphone jack to an amplier, for example.
