How do I set notifications for specific calendars?

In iOS how come all of my calender notifications have to appear in notification center? This is especially annoying when I can't figure out how to turn off birthdays!!! They're all linked from facebook as well as all of my contacts that I imported from google. It's extremely annoying to have 5 or 6 birthdays show up as notifications every day. I also have my classes and work schedule in my calender that I don't necessarily need to see when I want to look at notifications.

I have a calender labeled "Important" and I only want that to show up in notifications, I'd like everything else to just show up in the calender app. Is there any way to do that? And is there any way to turn off the excessive birthday notifications without unlinking facebook and remaking all of my contacts?

*Currently I have calender notifications completely off because it can't be selective.

What about a 3rd party calender app that I can turn notifications on for?

iPhone 5, iOS 6
