2 Boot Camp Questions

Good Evening Folks,

Two quick questions for a newbie to both mac and the boot camp program.

1) I am using a apple brand external modem for my dial-up connection (Yes, I know I am still in the stone age). When I use XP in boot camp it of course does not recognize the modem. Any ideas on what I could do or if there is a way to have it recognize the modem? Without the modem I have no way to get online when using xp.

2) I know that you can transfer files very easily from mac to xp via the drive on your desktop. What about when you are in windows mode. How would I access something on the mac side or say put a picture or song on the mac side?

Any and all advise is very much appreciated.

Thanks all,
John

1. The Apple External Modem is not compatible with Windows XP according to the Boot Camp Beta Installation & Setup Guide. Other hardware that will not work:

iSight Cameras
the Apple Remote
The Keyboard backlighting

2. MediaFour’s MacDrive helps Windows PCs access files that are stored on disks and drives formatted for the Macintosh. What’s more, MacDrive works on Intel Macs that have been equipped with Windows XP and Boot Camp.

With MacDrive installed, a Mac running Windows XP can see all the Mac- specific files and directories on their computer’s Mac OS X boot partition. No special steps are required beyond installing MacDrive — Mac disks appear automatically.

MacDrive’s functionality doesn’t stop there, either — you can also view all files on HFS and HFS+ formatted disks and external USB and FireWire drives. MacDrive can also burn Mac- compatible CD and DVD volumes.

MacDrive costs $49.95. A trial version is available.

I'm writing you, from XP side, using external USB Dial up, the maker is Best data, model # 56USBP , it's a Data AND Faqx modem, and works/made for both Mac and PC's. ($45.00)
There are 3 makers I found, that make a model made for both Mac's and PC's, and comes with the software for both OS's . One important item, the model for PC's must be for Win..ws XP WITH service pack 2, if it's just xp, it may not work. Besides Best data model above, Zoom modem makes 1, and also a model from Diamond, a Diamond Supra ----# I forget. In my case, I called Best data, (who say they now own/merged w/ DiamonD) , they had to send me, (email or regular mail, I chose em) a newer driver, for it to work w/ XPP Serv pack 2. In closing, I tried burning the new drivers on my iMac side, (I couldn't get online on the PC/Win..ws side). The iMac burned disc, WOULD NOT work on the Win..s side, I went to a local copy store, (Kinko's), and burned the email w/ drivers from a PC, on getting home it now worked, thus, burn a pc drviver from a pc, to a pc, If I find the exact model #'s of the other 2, Zoom and Diamond, I'll repost, but the above works. G'luck

Just a qwik note on 3 models, Best Data 56USSBP / Diamond Supra 336i SVD
and Zoom v.92/v.90 model 3090
Google and read on them first, I have the Best data above, works fine. And as in my prior, you need one that is compatible for both Mac's, and Win..ws XP WITH Service Pack 2. I called Best Data, they emailed me new driver s/ware for the Wind..s XP w/ Service pack 2, (the software CD it comes with, is for Mac's, and plain old Wind..ws XP, not for XP w/ Service Pack 2)
On sending picks/music from Mac to Windows, I would suggest emailing them to your email, and sign on for the em, on whatever side your on, I'm green on this, but if the items are in a format specific only to Mac's, or only to Windows, it may not work.. Also, Boot Camp refers partitioning in NTFS or FAT format, w/ FAT, you can write files to Wind..ws from Mac, and that FAT "provides better compatability", endquote from page 10 Boot Camp Beta installation and setup guide, and that Quote "NTFS-provides better reliability and security", endquote, I chose it for Security (NTFS), G'Luck
