Q: Aperture 3.4.1 issues - incl. doesn't work with Topaz

I have recently returned from holiday and auto-updated Aperture to 3.4.1.

There were some minor problems.  My plug-ins all wanted their serial numbers entered, but that was easy.

However, I also use Topaz labs software as an external editor (and also a plug-in).  The program is called photoFXlab.  Although I have set it up in Preferences -> Export and pointed Aperture to the program, when I try to use it the photograph I am working with doesn't come across to photoFXlab.

Under Preferences -> Export I have set the file format to be TIFF (16 bit) at 300 dpi, but it appears that Aperture is not creating this file.

I'd be grateful for suggestions on how to fix this.

Thanks!

With the new App Sandboxing in Aperture 3.4 some plug-ins are no longer compatible.

See Aperture 3.4 and later: Some third-party plug-ins are no longer compatible

Check the version of your plug-in (external editor) on the manufacturer's webpage, if it is sandboxed; you may need to upgrede to a newer version.

    Regards

    Hello Leonie

Thank you for replying.  This is the latest version of the Topaz software, just released 2 months ago.

    Michael,

I use photoFXlab & the other Topaz plugins with Aperture 3.4.1. The latest version of photoFXlab is v1.2. The software has not had an easy "birth" and there have been at least 2 upgrades since launch. I'm not wishing to doubt that you are on the latest version but it may be worth double checking that you're on v1.2.

    Thank you, mtb.

I was pretty sure I was on the latest version, and I am.  Version 1.2.0 built Tuesday Aug 21 at 16:30.

It didn't solve the problem, but was worth checking.

    Thanks again

I just tried to install photoFXlab - the latest version on MacOS X 10.8.2. On the Topaz Side it is listed as compatible with MAcOS X 10.6 and 10.7.

When I run the Installer, it shows up as incompatible with Mt. Lion - the dreaded "Ghostbusters" icon:

The bundle clearly contains components that are incompatible. What is your MacOS version? Is the signature 10.7,3. still correct?

For 10.7.5 do the same sandboxing restrictions apply as for 10.8.2.

    Hello Leonie

    According to this

    http://topazlabs.com/support/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=17

the software should run under 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.

Thank you for your ongoing suggestions!

    Hi Michael,

I've now tested this on my iMac (OSX 10.8.2) and I too cannot get photoFXlab to run as an external editor. It can be selected in preferences but does not export an image and nothing appears to happen.

It works fine as a plugin though, allowing layered images to be created and having access to the other Topaz Plugins. Can you access photoFXlab through this route? Does it offer you the functionality you need?

The notes on the Topaz site suggest that photoFXlab replaces Fusion Express as a plugin (more like a link to allow access to the other Topaz plugins), however, I'm able to run both alongside each other and can use each interchangeably depending on the task. photoFXlab is a more flexible and fully featured gateway.

I've had photoFXlab since release when running OS10.7.x and had no problems installing it under Lion. It has worked fine (as a plugin) since upgrading to ML.

As I'm writing this I'm beginning to wonder if photoFXlab is designed to run as an external editor in Aperture? Or if any users have had any success?

    HTH

    Ade

EDIT : Just reopened Aperture. When photoFXlab was used as an external editor it did create a new version (16-bit tiff as per my preference settings) but this did not export / launch photoFXlab.

    Hello mtb

I now am having problems installing photoFXlab as a plug-in.  Feeling very stupid as I have done it before, but even after searching the Topaz site I can't work it out.

I know this is not an Apple problem, but could you please help?

    Hi Michael,

This link should take you to the dowlads page on the topaz website:

    https://www.topazlabs.com/downloads/index.php

Then download the photFXlab installer for Mac - it will download a dmg file called topazsoftwaremanager_online_091812. Double click and follow the instructions. Once the initial install phase has completed (after clicking through the various confirmation boxes) you should see this dialogue box.

    Screen Shot 2012-10-10 at 22.55.00.png

Option 3 Fix installation problems should then give the option to repair photoFXlab. There is a further checkbox to re-install from the topz server. You could try giving this a go.

Advice comes with the usual health warning about making sure you have a working backup of your data etc.

    HTH

    Thank you, Adrian.

I also received this suggestion from Topaz.

I have done this (and even rebooted) but sadly the problem remains.

I have had a reply from Topaz.  It reads

"This is a known issue for the new aperture, we are working on it.   We will send you the solution when we have the fix. "

    Thank you all for trying.
