The error code means that the connection type is not supported. Not to be rude, but it is exactly what the text of the error message indicates. Has your customer tried a different connection type? More information on what your customer is doing - the printer, the setup, what (else?) has been tried - may elicit more helpful answers.

hi john.

the problem is hat i dont have really more information.
this printer driver we had installed x times on x tiger systems and it works well via tcpip protocoll. but now he start to made problems only on INTEL Mac !

i cant try it depends that i dont have a intel mac. on my intel pc (x86, 64 bit, dual boot with winxp) i have running the osx tiger too, but there i dont have this problem.

i had got also informations from germany that there is the same problem.. so i think it could be that this is a intel osx internal problem. but nowhere i could find this error number ! and i had think i have it all in my list 😟

with best greetings

I have the same kind of problem with a USB printer. An HP LaserJet 3330 MFP to be exact. It seems that, on occasion, Rosetta has problems dealing with non-X86 printer drivers. The error I got is related to the HP printer driver being unable to plug itself into the kernel to handle the printing task. Both HP and Apple are aware of the problem. To circumvent the problem, I have my iMac Core Duo print through a PowerPC Mac Mini acting as a print server. Lucky me I have enough hardware available to work around the problem. Otherwise, my printer would have become an expensive paperweight! 😉

Hi Andy,

I just read your posting from two weeks ago and thought I would add some info.

Yesterday I had a customer suffering the same problem. They had just purchased an iMac w Intel and were attempting to connect to a Canon iR4570. They had other PPC Mac's which were running varying versions of 10.4 and were all printing okay. But this iMac was getting the error -9786.

I found that he was trying to connect via IPP, but entering the queue name as LP (which is what you do for LPR connections). By changing the queue to socket://ip address:9100 the error was resolved.

The thing to note about this situation was that since this was the first printer he was adding to his Mac, the protocol was defaulted to IPP. With the previous driver installations he had performed on the other Mac's, the protocol was defaulted to LPR. This would have been due to this protocol being the last one used previously. But the customer had only been taught to add the IP address and the queue name and wasn't aware of the protocol menu...
