Restore Quicken from Time Machine - Permissions Problem

I use Quicken 2005. I had a problem with my Quicken Backup Folder, which has all the data files. When I go into Time Machine to restore the folder, or the individual files, I get the message "The operation cannot be completed because you don't have permission to access 'Quicken Backup Folder' ".

I checked the permissions on the file and I have Read & Write privleges, while "_unknown" and everyone have Read only permissions.

I checked the folder permissions and all three users have Read and Write privileges.

I am apparently having the same problem with at least some of the other folders.

When I go to the Time Machine disk, I note that the Time Machine folder has System as Read & Write, but everyone is Read only. Same is true of the subfolder.

Gosh I cannot be the only one that has this problem. I have found that I can restore a file, like a jpg in my documents folder. But when I go to restore a few select folders, I get a permission problem. Quicken Backup Folder gave me the error. So did Arcsoft. But Easy Rotator Preview restores just fine. All files and folders have [myusername](me) with read and write access. A few have everyone with custom setting.

Relying on TimeMachine does not do me any good if I cannot restore the files.

Thanks for the link.

I used the information here:

http://pondini.org/TM/E10.html

I tried restoring to an external drive and I got the error:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Quicken Backup Folder” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)

So then I tried restoring it to another partition of that same drive and I got the error:

The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “Quicken Backup Folder”.

So I created a disk image and tried to restore the files and got the error:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Quicken Backup Folder” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)

So instead of selecting a certain folder, I selected a certain file in that folder and got the following error:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “12231Banking01 to now ” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)

I tried a different file in that same folder and got the same error.

My thoughts exactly. So I went back to the first time I ran time machine and tried restoring to the disk image and got:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “1Banking01 to now ” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)

I even went into the time machine file and manually tried to drag the file to the disk image and got the same error.

Am beginning to think that I have a problem with that hard drive. I am hesitant to repair the Time Machine disk drive using Disk Utility. Last time I did that on a different external drive, Disk Utility's repair job made the Time Machine disk unusable for Time Machine and I had to start all over.

No, it has never done this before on this HD. Oddly, it did do it before on another external HD running Time Machine. This is a fairly new drive, larger than the other one and I partitioned it.

I turned off Time Machine. I then rebooted. The Time Machine icon for the hard drive is gone, replaced by the standard icon.

I ran Disk Utility again. This time, it says that the drive appears to be OK. I ran it two more times, with the same effect. Not certain what this means.

So now I have manually gone into the files stored from Time Machine. Now I can restore some files, but others I get the dreaded "You don't have permission..."

Can restore:

(Me) Read & Write

_unknown Read

everyone Read

Cannot restore:

(Me) Read & Write

_unknown Read & Write

everyone No Access

Interestingly, when I tried to change permissions for _unknown, it disappeared.

I tried all permutations. Everyone (including Me) Read Only. Then Read & Write. I applied to enclosed items. Then Read Only again.

No luck.

What do I do to make certain that this does not happen again. It seems like the files are there, but I have a #$%Q#$^ permissions problem. This is the one thing that comes up on OS X on occasion and is vexing. Makes me pine for OS 9.

I restarted the Mac and ran AppleJack. Now when I go into the TimeMachine hard drive and change (Me) back to Read & Write - plus copy to enclosed items, I can restore the problem. TimeMachine is off.

But, now this is really funny, when I restart TimeMachine and use the TimeMachine interface to try to restore the file (from the same date as above), I get the permissions error.

And now, when I go in manually to retrieve the same folder that I was able to get before, I get a permissions error. Other folders that I was able to restore manually with TimeMachine off also give me a permissions problem.

Isn't there anyway to get this thing to ignore permissions?

Seething with frustration here.

Haven't a clue why you tried mucking with _unknown, vice everyone. Select the volume holding TM, CMD+I, and there should be an Ignore ownership on this volume option at the bottom. If not, then it's something tied to TM volumes, which I know not much about. The only other thing I can suggest is to peruse VK's solution at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2329689?threadID=2329689

However, use these instead:

sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"name of volume holding the TM backup"

sudo chmod a+rx /Volumes/"name of volume holding the TM backup"

Ensure that you backup the TM sparceimage file before doing it.

"Click on a file with everyone No Access, CMD+I, and change everyone to Read only." and "Haven't a clue why you tried mucking with _unknown"

I misunderstood your instructions. By "everyone", I thought you meant all the permissions including "_unknown" vs. the specific permission labeled "everyone".

The external hard drive is partitioned. "Ignore ownership" is selected on the volume that is not TimeMachine. There is no such option on the TimeMachine volume.

I will follow up with your suggestions. Thanks.
