The question...which was asked over 4 years ago......was whether AirPort Utility 5.x would run on a Mac running Lion 10.7.x.

At about the same time, Apple changed their support document to indicate that AirPort Utility 5.x would run on Lion Macs up to (10.7.2).

So, the 5.x version of AirPort Utility cannot be installed using Apple's installer from Lion (10.7.3) forward, which would include subsequent versions of Lion, all versions of Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and now Sierra.

That being said, some users have reported that they have found unauthorized and unsupported software on the Internet which might allow 5.x versions of AirPort Utility to be installed on Macs running newer operating systems. Unfortunately, the software requires that the user change some of the default security settings on their Mac for newer operating system versions....never a good idea.....and Apple will not support users who have difficulty with their unauthorized software installations, nor will the folks who supply the unsupported software.

Thanks for the information. This post came up in a search, so I wanted to include the fact that the older utility will not work, well, ever.

The other solution here is to "get an older mac" to administer it. This is an option for me, but it won't be for everyone. My 1st Gen Airport Express still works just fine, but if I want to do anything with it, the only option is to reset it and hope the factory setting are sufficient. Fine for streaming music, which is what I use it for, but if you want to do anything specific, you may be at a dead end. This is unfortunate - I thought the AirPort Express was one of the more handy things I've ever purchased, especially for people like me who move around a lot.

Thanks again.

Or a PC and install AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows on the device. It was embarrassing for me to ask my neighbor to bring over his PC laptop for a few minutes so that I could administer an older Apple product.

The original poster never responded to mention whether he was able to install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion, or whether that did not work and he needed more assistance, so the thread became dormant for over 4 years, so "workarounds" were not discussed.
