Q: Imports not showing in iTunes library

Occationally songs or movies imported into iTunes do not show up in the library.   How can I rebuilt the library or otherwise get iTunes to recognize these media files?   The only successful work-around I use has been to force a change of media type temporarily but this option isn't always available when the option is shaded gray.
