Where can I buy an unlocked iPhone 5 in the US?

The unlocked iPhone 5 has NOT yet been made available for sale in the US--either online or via the Apple Store.

I believe I saw that verizon is selling unlocked iPhone 5's.

Incorrect. The GSM portion of the phone is unlocked, but the phone must be purchased with a contract.

Infomation from Verizon is conflicting as to whether Verizon iPhone 5s have the GSM portion unlocked at time of shipment or whether Verizon has to unlock it as they do with the iPhone 4S. In any case, sending a Verizon iPhone to China would in my opinion not be wise since there would be no support of any kind for it there (nor for any US-sold iPhone).

I have yet to see Apple selling them unlocked from their site, but maybe soon.

Also, Verizon's version of the iPhone 5 already comes unlocked, depending on what carrier type they would (CDMA/GSM) that may be your best route to go through Verizon. I havent seen the

Thom_D is correct. All of Verizon's iPhone 5's are unlocked. You can buy one without a contract (month to month) for $649.99.

But, they first MUST be activated on Verizon's network...this of course requires signing up for service with Verizon. Also, anytime the phone is updated or restored, it MUST be reactivated on Verizon's network.

Bottom line...poor choice if you want an officially unlocked iPhone.

I've read reports that Apple's flagship store on 5th Ave, in New York, has gotton stocks...they sell out by 9:00Am & require standing in line...sometimes for hours.

Oh yea, had a poster from India the other day...Verizon iPhone 5...of course couldn't activate it in India...missed that little detail 😎.

Officially unlocked...limited supplies...stand in line early...when they get them, they sell out quick.

Yes, of course, and if you read the link you would have seen that one can sign up for month by month service, thus not having to sign a 2 year contract, and getting away with one month max.

How does that happen when one updates/restores via iTunes at home with no contact with Verizon?
