Large hidden files are bloating my computer

I was just doing some backing up maintenance with Retrospect and noticed that 7 of the 10GB worth of stuff being backed up on my desktop were massive files that I couldn't see and have really long filenames consisting of letters and numbers like: ASZ1TY4KLDJ0087DLPRZX34SDJJKFJ or similar.

What are these and how can I safely get rid of them?
