run snow leopard as VM on mountain lion

Is there a way to run Snow Leopard (workstation - NOT server) as a VM on Parallels on top of Mountain Lion?

If tis were possible, then you could run Rosetta old applications and still have Mountain Lion benefits.

Both VMWare and Paralles say that it can't be done due to a Apple licensing restriction.

Can Apple change this? PLEASE?

Install Snow Leopard into Parallels:

This is a common Urban Myth! I have been promoting this solution for over one year and no one has ever met my challenge to show me any official written statement by Apple prohibiting using Snow Leopard in Parallels.

Michael,

Thanks-- this is very helpful-- but also looks a little complicated.

Also it looks like I would have to install SL and then run all the updates and then install all the appications. The problem with that (if I understand it correctly) is that it seems like a ton of time and work. Also- one application is from a company that is no longer in business. So I am not sure I will be able to install it.

OR

It would be nice if I could just restore from a full clone backup of my existing running system. Is that possible?

P.S. ----------------------------------------

I spent time with both VMWare and Parallels to ask the specific question about running Snow Leopard (workstation) as a VM -- talked at-length-- and they both said only the SL server is supported. You can see this on the VMWare web site under their compatibility chart. They specifically say - ONLY SL Server.

Only a little complicated! The most troublesome part currently is the inability to complete STEP ONE in Mountain Lion: you have to complete it on a Mac running Snow Leopard or Lion and then move the modified .cdr image file to the Mt. Lion Mac and complete the remaining steps.

I personally have not yet upgraded to Mt. Lion (Lion is running fine for me!), so I have others working on the problem, but so far no luck getting STEP ONE to work in Mt. Lion.

As to the rest of the instructions, if you follow them slowly and carefully they can be accomplished. I am available over at the thread on MacRumors to assist you if need be...

Your original question was: "Is there a way to run Snow Leopard (workstation - NOT server) as a VM on Parallels on top of Mountain Lion?

"If tis (sic) were possible, then you could run Rosetta old applications and still have Mountain Lion benefits."

I am not sure why now you question all of the steps required to get Snow Leopard installed, updated and then the PowerPC applications installed... But in any event, in is not as timely as you make it seem and remember it only has to be done ONCE! Then you have the Snow Leopard virtualized environment available to you on command!

What application? Perhaps you can just copy it from your old applications folder and it will run...

What OS X are you running and on what hardware? Tiger on an Intel MacBook? Your hardware may be too old to run Mountain Lion, so you may be limited in your upgrading options.

Although you might check with their technical support, I do not believe that you can restore a clone from within Parallels,

Snow Leopard Server is available on eBay for as little as $100-$125! Not only would this be easier for you to install (and would be officially supported by VMWare and Parallels), but would apparently make two employees of both VMWare and Parallels who talked at-length with you eligible for Employee of the Month honors!

It is October 10, 2012 and STILL no one has ever met my challenge to show me any official written statement by Apple prohibiting using Snow Leopard in Parallels.
